Santos protomártires de la Iglesia Romana

En el año 64 se produjo un incendio en Roma. La ciudad ardió durante casi diez días y, en seguida, se extendió el runor de que la catástrofe había sido provocada por el emperador Nerón. Este culpó a los cristianos y se desató una persecución contra ellos. Algunos fueron arrojados a las fieras y otros crucificados y quemados.  

Explicaba san Agustín que lo que hace al mártir no es la cantidad de su sufrimiento sino la causa de su sufrimiento. Podemos sufrir mucho por defender nuestras propias opiniones o proyectos, pero el mártir no sufre por eso sino por la verdad de la fe. También podemos sufrir mucho con la esperanza de una recomopensa terrena, pero los mártires padecen con la esperanza de la vida eterna. Y, finalmente, podemos padecer mucho sin amor o, incluso, pidiendo venganza mientras que los mártires, imitando a Cristo, murieron perdonando. 

Por intercesión de la Virgen María pedimos a Dios la fortaleza de los mártires para perseverar siempre en la fe, en la esperanza y en la caridad.

Holy protomartyrs of the Roman Church

In 64 a fire broke out in Rome. The city burned for almost ten days, and soon the rumor spread that the catastrophe had been caused by Emperor Nero. He blamed the Christians and a persecution was unleashed against them. Some were thrown to the beasts and others crucified and burned.

Saint Augustine explained that “men are made martyrs not by the amount of their suffering, but by the cause in which they suffer.” We can suffer a lot to defend our own opinions or projects, but the martyr does not suffer for that but for the truth of the faith. We can also suffer a lot in the hope of an earthly reward, but the martyrs suffer in the hope of eternal life. And finally, we can suffer a lot without love or even asking for revenge while the martyrs, imitating Christ, died forgiving.

Through the intercession of the Virgin Mary we ask God for the strength of the martyrs to always persevere in faith, hope and charity.
