Santos Pedro y Pablo

San Pedro y San Pablo sufrieron martirio en Roma hacia el año 67.

Antes de que los dos apóstoles llegaran a la capital del Imperio ya había allí una comunidad cristiana a la que san Pablo dirigió una de sus cartas. 

¿Por qué fueron a Roma? El Papa Benedicto XVI explicaba que san Pablo fue allí impulsado por el afán misionero que debía llevar el evangelio a todos los confines de la tierra para que la Iglesia fuera católica; no Iglesia de un país o de una raza sino universal. San Pedro, por su parte, dejó Jerusalén y viajó hasta Roma para asegurar que esa Iglesia universal, católica, fuera siempre Una. Él y sus sucesores tienen la misión de servir a la unidad de la iglesia confirmando a todos en la fe. 

Jesús ha prometido que el poder del infierno no prevalecerá sobre esa Iglesia misionera que ha de anunciar el Evangelio y conservar el depósito de la fe hasta que el Señor vuelva. 

Con esa confianza oramos hoy por la Iglesia y por el Papa. Santa María, Madre de la Iglesia, ruega por tus hijos para que el Espíritu Santo nos impulse a llevar por todas partes la alegría del Evangelio y a permanecer en la unidad.

Saints Peter and Paul

Saint Peter and Saint Paul suffered martyrdom in Rome around the year 67.

Before the two apostles reached the capital of the Empire, there was already a Christian community there to which St. Paul addressed one of his letters.

Why did they go to Rome? Pope Benedict XVI explained that Saint Paul was there impelled by the missionary zeal that  should take the Gospel to all the ends of the earth so that the Church was Catholic; not Church of a country or of a race but universal. Saint Peter, for his part, left Jerusalem and traveled to Rome to ensure that this universal, Catholic Church was always One. He and his successors have the mission to serve the unity of the church by confirming everyone in the faith.

Jesus has promised that the power of hell will not prevail over that missionary Church that has to proclaim the Gospel and keep the deposit of faith until the Lord returns.

With that confidence we pray today for the Church and for the Pope. Holy Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for your children so that the Holy Spirit impels us to carry the joy of the Gospel everywhere and to remain in unity.
