La Santísima Trinidad

Tanto amó Dios al mundo que entregó a su Unigénito para que todo el que crea en él tenga vida eterna.

Acabamos de recibir a Lorena en el orden de los catecúmenos. Le hemos preguntado qué pide a la Iglesia y ha respondido «la fe». A la pregunta «¿qué otorga la fe?», ella ha contestado: «la vida eterna». Y es así: por la fe en Cristo y el Bautismo alcanzamos la vida eterna. 

Celebramos hoy el amor de Dios, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo que ha querido revelarse a nosotros y hacernos partícipes de su vida divina. A cambio pide que creamos en Cristo, su Unigénito. 

A veces la palabra «creer» se usa como sinónimo de «opinar». No es el caso. Creer en Dios es abrir el corazón a su Palabra aceptándola plenamente como Palabra de Verdad. Esa fe es la respuesta adecuada a la revelación de Dios y así vemos cómo la Virgen responde al anuncio del ángel con  total entrega de fe: «he aquí la esclava del Señor, hágase en mí segun tu palabra». 

No es raro oír a algunos que se llaman cristianos decir que da igual lo que cada uno crea porque lo que importa es ser buenas personas o algo así. En el fondo, lo que cada uno cree, es lo que cada uno opina. Y, desde luego, no son nuestras opiniones las que pueden darnos la vida eterna. La Iglesia no es un club de debate en el que se reúne la buena gente sino la congregación de los que creen todo lo que Dios ha revelado y guardan el depósito de la fe sin añadir ni quitar nada. 

«Guardar». A veces la Palabra de Dios resulta misteriosa y no se entiende. No tiene nada de extraño dado que nuestra inteligencia no puede agotar el misterio de Dios. De la Virgen María también se nos dice que, algún momento, no entendió y, sin embargo, guardaba todas las cosas que se referían a Jesús en su corazón. No se nos da la doctrina de salvación para que la ajustemos según el molde de nuestra razón sino para que, guardándola y meditándola en el corazón, dé en nosotros frutos de vida eterna. 

Precisamente por fidelidad al evangelio y a la verdad revelada dieron  su vida los Apostoles y los mártires. También nosotros debemos defender el deposito de la fe que hemos recibido, aún a costa de la vida, y no hay en ello fanatismo o exageración porque, si cambiásemos la fe de los Apóstoles por cualquier doctrina humana, lo que perderíamos sería la vida eterna.

En esta imagen que veneramos en la parroquia aparece la Virgen María coronada en el Cielo por el Padre, el Hijo y el Espiritu Santo. Es una imagen de lo que Dios quiere hacer con nosotros: comunicarnos su vida divina para que caminemos por este mundo en la fe hasta que nos llegue el momento de entrar de lleno en la luz de la gloria.

The Holy Trinity

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

We have just received Lorena into the order of the catechumens. We have asked her what she asks of the Church and she has answered “faith”. To the question "what does faith bestow?" She has answered, "eternal life." It is so: through faith in Christ and Baptism we attain eternal life.

Today we celebrate the love of God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit Who has wanted to reveal Himself to us and make us participants in His divine life. In return, He asks us to believe in Christ, His Only Begotten Son.

Sometimes "to believe" is used synonymously with "to opine". It is not the case. To believe in God is to open your heart to His Word, accepting it fully as the Word of Truth. That faith is the adequate response to the revelation of God and thus we see how the Virgin responds to the angel's announcement with total assent of faith: "behold, the Handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto Me according to your word."

It is not uncommon to hear some who call themselves Christians say that it does not matter what one believes because what matters is being good people or something like that. In this case, what one believes is what one opines. Of course, it is not our opinions that can give us eternal life. The Church is not a debating club where the good people gather, but the congregation of those who believe everything that God has revealed and keep the deposit of faith without adding or taking anything away.

"To keep". Sometimes the Word of God is mysterious and is not understood. There is nothing strange in that our intelligence cannot exhaust the mystery of God. Of the Virgin Mary we are also told that, at some point, She did not understand and yet She kept all the things that referred to Jesus in Her heart. We are not given the doctrine of salvation so that we may adjust it according to the limits of our reason but so that, keeping it and meditating on it in our hearts, it may bear fruit of eternal life in us.

Precisely out of fidelity to the Gospel and the revealed truth the Apostles and the martyrs gave their lives. We too must defend the deposit of faith that we have still received, even at the cost of life, and there is no fanaticism or exaggeration because if we changed the faith of the Apostles for any human doctrine what we would lose would be eternal life.

In this image that we venerate, the Virgin Mary is crowned in heaven by the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It is an image of what God wants to do with us: communicate His divine life to us so that we walk through this world in faith until the time comes for us to enter fully into the light of glory.
