San Cirilo de Alejandría

San Cirilo, obispo de Alejandría, es uno de los treinta y seis doctores de la Iglesia. 

En el siglo V un obispo de Constantinopla llamado Nestorio empezó a enseñar que a la Virgen María había que llamarla Madre de Cristo pero no Madre de Dios. El santo obispo de Alejandría le escribió recordándole que debía defender la fe recibida de los Apóstoles. Nestorio y Cirilo acudieron al Papa san Celestino que desautorizó a Nestorio.

Para ratificar la verdadera fe de la Iglesia se convocó un Concilio en Éfeso. Lo presidió san Cirilo en representación del Papa, y los obispos reunidos allí confirmaron que Cristo, Dios y Hombre verdadero, nació de Santa María Virgen y que, por tanto, ella es verdaderamente la Madre de Dios hecho Hombre. Todo el pueblo de Éfeso salió a la calle para celebrar esa nueva muestra de fidelidad de la Iglesia a la Verdad revelada y para honrar a la Virgen. 

Por intercesión de Santa María, Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, pedimos que Dios fortalezca la fe de los obispos, sucesores de los Apóstoles y encargados de confirmarnos a todos en la Verdad.

Saint Cyril of Alexandria

Saint Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, is one of the thirty-six doctors of the Church.

In the 5th century a bishop of Constantinople named Nestorius began to teach that the Virgin Mary had to be called the Mother of Christ but not the Mother of God. The holy bishop of Alexandria wrote to him reminding him that he must defend the faith received from the Apostles. Nestorius and Cyril appealed to Pope Saint Celestine who disavowed Nestorius.

To ratify the true faith of the Church, a Council was convened in Ephesus. It was chaired by Saint Cyril representing the Pope and the bishops gathered there confirmed that Christ, God and true Man, was born of Holy Virgin Mary and, therefore, She is truly the Mother of God made Man. All the people of Ephesus took to the streets to celebrate this new manifestation of Church's fidelity to the revealed Truth and to honor the Virgin.

Through the intercession of Holy Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, we ask that God strengthens the faith of the bishops, successors of the Apostles and in charge of confirming us all in the Truth.
