Santa María Micaela del Santísimo Sacramento

Hoy hacemos la memoria de santa María Micaela del Santísimo Sacramento, que fue vizcondesa de Jorbalán. Nacida durante la Guerra de la Independencia contra las tropas napoleónicas, renunció al matrimonio y se dedicó a las obras de caridad. Fundó la Congregación de las Adoratrices que, hasta el día de hoy, centran su vida en la adoración de la Eucaristía y en el rescate de mujeres oprimidas por la prostitución. Murió en Valencia, donde había acudido para socorrer a las víctimas de la epidemia de 1865 y donde ella misma contrajo la enfermedad.

Durante la Guerra Civil española veintisiete adoratrices fueron torturadas y asesinadas en Madrid por los milicianos. 

Hoy son más de mil y están presentes en veinticinco países. 

En 2015 recibieron el Premio Rey de España de Derechos Humanos como reconocimiento a su larga lucha contra la trata de mujeres. Pero a ellas no les importan los premios sino, como quería su fundadora, la gloria de Dios y la salvación de las jóvenes. Más de mil religiosas valientes, alegres y enamoradas de Cristo.

Pedimos por intercesión de Santa María que el ejemplo de María Micaela y de sus hijas nos mueva a la adoración de Dios y al servicio del prójimo.

Saint Mary Michele of the Blessed Sacrament

Today we celebrate the memory of Santa María Micaela del Santísimo Sacramento, who was viscountess of Jorbalán. Born during the War of Independence against the Napoleonic troops, she renounced marriage and dedicated herself to charity work. She founded the Congregation of Adorers who, to this day, focus their lives on the adoration of the Eucharist and on the rescue of women oppressed by prostitution. She died in Valencia, where she had gone to help the victims of the 1865 epidemic and where she herself contracted the disease.

During the Spanish Civil War, twenty seven members of the congregation were tortured and killed in Madrid by the militiamen.

Today they are more than a thousand and are present in twenty-five countries.

In 2015 they received ‘The King of Spain Award for Human Rights’ in recognition of their long struggle against trafficking in women. Anyway they do not care about the prizes but, as their founder wanted, the glory of God and the salvation of young women. More than a thousand brave and happy nuns in love with Christ.

We ask, through the intercession of Our lady, that the example of Maria Micaela and her daughters move us to the adoration of God and the service of neighbour.

San Antonio de Padua

Fue bautizado en Lisboa con el nombre de Fernando. Tomó el nombre de Antonio cuando, a los veintiseis años, ingresó en la Orden de los Hermanos Menores recién fundada por San Francisco de Asís. Ese mismo año de 1221 asistió en Asís al Capítulo General de la Orden y conoció al santo fundador. 

Murió en Padua sin haber cumplido los treinta y seis años pero, en su corta vida, ganó fama de santo y de sabio. Asombraba su conocimiento de las Sagradas Escrituras y el mismo san Francisco le encargó la formación teológica de sus hermanos. Conmovía los corazones con su predicación y trabajaba con empeño por aliviar las penas de los pobres. 

Tanta era su fama de santidad que fue canonizado al año siguiente de su muerte. 

De él se cuenta que, en una ocasión, se le concedió la gracia de recibir en sus brazos al Niño Jesús. Su imagen más conocida lo representa así, sosteniendo y contemplando con amor al Divino Niño. 

Pedimos por intercesión de la Virgen María la gracia de recibir también nosotros la visita de Jesús Sacramentado con humildad, pureza y devoción.

Saint Anthony of Padua

He was baptized in Lisbon with the name of Fernando. He took the name of Antonio when, at the age of twenty-six, he entered the Order of the Friars Minor recently founded by Saint Francis of Assisi. That same year, 1221, he attended the General Chapter of the Order in Assisi and met the holy founder.

He died in Padua without being thirty-six years old, but, in his short life, he gained fame of a santity and a wisdom. His knowledge of the Holy Scriptures was amazing and Saint Francis himself commissioned him to the theological formation of his brothers. He used to move hearts with his preaching and worked tirelessly to ease the suffering of the poor.

So great was his reputation for holiness that he was canonized the year after his death.

It is said that, on one occasion, he was granted the grace of receiving the Child Jesus in his arms. His best-known image represents him like this, holding and contemplating with love the Divine Child.

We ask through the intercession of the Virgin Mary for the grace to also  receive the visit ofJesus in the Eucharist with humility, purity and devotion.

San Bernabé, apóstol

De san Bernabé dicen los Hechos de los Apóstoles que «era un hombre bueno y lleno del Espíritu Santo y de fe» y san Lucas lo llama «hijo de la consolación». No formaba parte del grupo de dos Doce pero fue uno de los primeros que vendieron sus bienes y entregaron el dinero a los apóstoles. Cuando san Pablo llegó a Jerusalén después de su conversión, muchos discípulos que sabían que había sido perseguidor de la Iglesia le tenían miedo. Fue san Bernabé quien lo llevó ante los apóstoles y habló en favor de él. Luego fue elegido para viajar a Antioquía y para exhortar a los primeros discípulos de aquella ciudad a permanecer fieles. Allí, por primera vez, se dio el nombre de «cristianos» a los discípulos de Cristo. Por esta y otras misiones que realizó con san Pablo y con san Marcos él mismo mereció el título de Apóstol. 

Cuando Jesús envió a los Doce en la primera misión les encargó que fueran solamente a las ovejas descarriadas de Israel para anunciar la cercanía del Reino de Dios. Después de su resurreción los envió no solamente a Israel sino a todo el mundo para bautizar y para enseñar a los bautizados a guardar todo lo que Él mismo les había enseñado. Así hay que entender la exhortación de Bernabé a los de Antioquía. Permanecer fieles a Jesús con todo el corazón es guardar, como un tesoro, la doctrina cristiana.

Decimos en el Credo que la Iglesia es Apostólica, es decir, que no anuncia sino la doctrina que los apóstoles recibieron de Cristo: una doctrina que salva. 

Por intercesión de santa María pedimos para nosotros y para toda la Iglesia esa perseverancia en la doctrina apostólica.  Reina de los Apóstoles, ruega por nosotros. 

San Efrén

San Efrén

En la oración colecta hemos pedido el don del Espíritu Santo que movió a San Efrén a servir a Dios con fortaleza y a cantar con gozo para Él. Gozo en la alabanza y fortaleza en el servicio de Dios. 

San Efrén el Sirio vivió en el siglo IV y, según dicen, era muy serio y austero. Las personas un poco frívolas solemos confundir la alegría con la risa y nos cuesta entender que un hombre serio  austero y, además, sirio y del siglo IV, pueda ser, al mismo tiempo, alegre. Cuando abundan el trigo y el vino estamos de un humor excelente y bromeamos con todo aunque eso que llamamos alegría desaparece ante la menor contrariedad. 

«Pero tú, Señor, has puesto en mi corazón más alegría que si abundara en trigo y en vino» dice el salmista. La alegría que pone Dios en el corazón de los santos no tiene nada que ver con la frivolidad y sí, mucho, con la seriedad de su compromiso y de su empeño por servir a Dios y al prójimo. 

En un sermón dedicado a la Virgen María se admiraba san Efrén al considerar que «aquel cuya morada es eterna, se sienta en las rodillas de una virgen». Quiera Dios que, al comulgar, recordemos que estamos recibiendo a Aquel a quien adoran los mismos ángeles, y que el ejemplo de humildad de la Virgen nos mueva a alabarlo con gozo y a comprometernos seriamente en su servicio. 

Santa María, causa de nuestra alegría, ruega por nosotros.

Saint Ephrem

In the collection prayer we have asked for the gift of the Holy Spirit that moved Saint Ephrem to serve God with fortitude and to sing with joy for Him. Joy in praising and fortitude in the service of God.

Saint Ephrem the Syrian lived in the fourth century and, they say, was very serious and austere. Those of us who are a little bit frivolous usually confuse joy with laughter and we find it hard to understand that a serious and austere man, especially if he is a Syrian from the fourth century, can be, at the same time, a joyful person. When wheat and wine abound we are in excellent mood and joke easily, although what we call joy disappears when the slightest trouble comes.

"But you, Lord, have put more joy in my heart than if it abounded in wheat and wine," says the psalmist. The joy that God places in the hearts of the saints has nothing to do with frivolity but with the seriousness of their commitment and their endeavour to serve God and neighbour.

In a sermon dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Saint Ephrem marvels considering that "He whose dwelling is eternal, sits on the knees of a virgin." 

May God grant that when we receive Communion we remember the One whom the same angels adore, and that the example of the Virgin's humility moves us to praise Him with joy and to commit ourselves seriously in His service.

San Norberto

San Norberto nació a finales del siglo XI en el seno de una noble familia alemana. Una primera conversión lo llevó a abrazar el estado religioso y el emperador Enrique V lo nombró limosnero. 

Pero Dios quería algo más de él. Un día, cabalgando, tuvo un accidente y perdió el conocimiento. Cuando se despertó vino a sus labios una oración «Señor, ¿que quieres que haga» y a su memoria el salmo 34: «Apártate del mal, obra el bien, busca la paz y corre tras ella». A esta segunda llamada respondió retirándose durante cuarenta días para llevar una vida de penitencia entregado al ayuno y la oración. Después de su retiro recibió el orden sacerdotal.

Entonces pudo experimentar la verdad de aquellas palabras de san Pablo a Timoteo: «quien quiera vivir piadosamente en Cristo será perseguido». Lo acusaron de querer reformar la Iglesia sin tener autoridad para ello y esa contrariedad le sirvió para dar el tercer paso hacia su definitiva conversión: vendió todos sus bienes, repartió el dinero entre los pobres, fue a ver al Papa, le prometió obediencia y le pidió permiso para predicar.

Las dificultades no terminaron porque, como también había dicho san Pablo, los hombres no siempre soportamos al que nos dice la verdad y preferimos rodearnos de aduladores. Pero ahora estaba claro que Norberto era un hombre de Dios dispuesto a correr no tras la comodidad, sino tras la paz verdadera. 

En el valle frences de Prémontré fundó una abadía con doce compañeros. Pronto fueron cuarenta y luego se multiplicaron las abadías hasta formar una orden con más de diez comunidades. Otro emperador, Lotario, lo propuso como obispo de Magdeburgo y allí entregó el resto de su vida, hasta los cincuenta y dos años, empeñado en la reforma de la iglesia cumpliendo perfectamente el consejo de san Pablo a Timoteo: «proclama la palabra, insiste a tiempo y a destiempo, soporta lo adverso, cumple tu tarea de evangelizador, desempeña tu ministerio».

Pedimos por intercesión de Santa María que el Señor quiera suscitar entre nosotros santos pastores que vivan según el Corazón de Cristo.

Saint Norbert

Saint Norbert was born at the end of the 11th century into a noble German family. A first conversion led him to embrace the religious state and, under Emperor Henry V, became his almoner.

But God wanted something more from him. One day, riding, he had an accident and lost consciousness. When he woke up a prayer came to his lips, "Lord, what do you want me to do?" and to his memory psalm 34, "Get away from evil, do good, seek peace and run after it." To this second call he responded by retiring for forty days to lead a life of penance by fasting and prayer. After his retirement he was ordained a priest.

Then he could experience the truth of those words of Saint Paul to Timothy, "Whoever wants to live piously in Christ will be persecuted." They accused him of wanting to reform the Church without having the authority to do so, and that accusation helped him take the third step towards his final conversion: he sold all his goods, distributed the money among the poor, went to see the Pope, promised him obedience and asked permission to preach.

The difficulties did not end because, as Saint Paul had also said, men do not always endure the one who tells us the truth and we prefer to surround ourselves with flatterers. But it was now clear that Norbert was a man of God willing to run not after comfort, but after true peace.

In the French valley of Prémontré he founded an abbey with twelve companions. Soon there were forty and then the abbeys multiplied to form an order with more than ten communities. Another Emperor, Lothario, proposed him as bishop of Magdeburg and there he spent the rest of his life, up to the age of fifty-two, engaged in the reform of the church, perfectly fulfilling the advice of Saint Paul to Timothy, "Proclaim the word, insist in season and out of season, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry."

We ask through the intercession of Saint Mary that the Lord wants to raise up among us holy shepherds who live according to the Heart of Christ.

San Bonifacio, obispo y mártir

San Bonifacio fue un monje inglés a quien, en el siglo VIII, consagró como obispo el Papa Gregorio II enviándolo a evangelizar Alemania. Con su vida santa, su trabajo incansable, su energía y talento para el gobierno se granjeó la admiración de los reyes, convirtió a muchos paganos y mereció el título de «Apóstol de Alemania». Coronó su obra con el martirio y fue enterrado en la abadía de Fulda que él mismo había fundado. 

Suele decirse que la fortaleza se manifiesta en la valentía, cuando hay que atacar, y en la paciencia cuando hay que resistir y sufrir. Ambas cosas —valentía  y paciencia— son necesarias porque, como recordaba san Pablo a Timoteo, «el que quiera vivir piadosamente en Cristo será perseguido». 

De san Bonifacio se cuenta que, cuando lo llevaron ante una encina que los paganos adoraban, la cortó sin contemplaciones. Luego, cuando vinieron a matarlo, con la misma fortaleza, se dispuso a sufrir pacientemente por Cristo. 

Pedimos por tu intercesión, Madre del Cielo, que seamos siempre fuertes en la fe.

Saint Boniface, Bishop and Martyr

Saint Boniface was an English monk whom, in the 8th century, Pope Gregory II consecrated as bishop, sending him to evangelise Germany. With his holy life, tireless work, energy, and talent for government, he won the admiration of kings, converted many pagans, and deserved the title of "Apostle of Germany." He crowned his work with martyrdom and was buried in Fulda Abbey, which he had founded.

It is often said that strength manifests itself in courage, when you have to attack, and in patience when you have to resist and suffer. Both things — courage and patience — are necessary because, as St. Paul reminded Timothy, "whoever wants to live piously in Christ will be persecuted."

They tell of Saint Boniface that, when he was brought before an oak tree that the heathen worshiped, he cut it off unceremoniously. Then, when they came to kill him, with the same strength, he prepared to suffer patiently for Christ.

We ask through your intercession, Mother of Heaven, that we are always strong in faith.

Los mártires de Uganda dieron testimonio de su fe a finales del siglo XIX. El rey Muanga miraba con simpatía a los cristianos y agradecía su lealtad hasta el punto de contar con algunos de ellos entre sus consejeros. Pero, cuando empezó a solicitar a los jóvenes para que tuvieran relaciones con él y vio que no cedían, desató la persecución contra la naciente Iglesia. 

Carlos Luanga era uno de esos jóvenes. Tenía veintiún años cuando fue quemado en una hoguera con sus compañeros; el menor, un niño de trece años.

En la segunda Carta a Timoteo, san Pablo dice que ha sido «llamado a anunciar la promesa de vida que hay en Cristo Jesús». Precisamente esa promesa es la que sostiene a los mártires cristianos. Ellos aman la vida, la reciben y la celebran cada día como un don de Dios. No buscan la muerte, como no la buscó nuestro Señor Jesucristo pero, llegado el caso, antes que vender su alma, preferen entregar su vida a Dios.  

Regina Martyrum ampara a los cristianos perseguidos y ayúdanos a buscar la fuente de la vida verdadera en el corazón Sagrado y Misericordioso de Jesús.

Wednesday of the ninth week in Ordinary Time

Uganda's martyrs testified to their faith in the late 1800s. King Muanga regarded the Christians with sympathy and thanked them for their loyalty to the point of having some of them among their counsellors. But, when he began to ask the young men to have relations with him and saw that they did not yield, he unleashed the persecution against the new born Church.

Carlos Lwanga was one of those young men. He was twenty-one years old when he was burned at the stake with his companions; the youngest, a boy of thirteen.

In the second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul says that he has been "called to announce the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus." It is precisely that promise that sustains Christian martyrs. They love life, they receive it and celebrate it every day as a gift from God. They do not seek death, as our Lord Jesus Christ did not seek it, but, if necessary, rather than sell their soul, prefer to give their lives to God.

Martes de la novena semana del tiempo ordinario

Santos Marcelino y Pedro, mártires

Al celebrar la memoria de los santos Marcelino y Pedro, que sufrieron el martirio durante la persecución de Diocleciano, en el siglo III, recordamos que el cristiano debe estar dispuesto a morir  antes que negar a Cristo. 

Como el poder de las tinieblas sigue obrando en el mundo, actuar con justicia y rectitud no siempre sale gratis. Ser cristiano significa estar dispuesto, como Cristo, a pagar el precio del dolor, de la incomprensión y hasta de la muerte «por causa de la justicia».

Hemos leído en la segunda carta de san Pedro: «estad en guardia para que no os arrastre el error de esos hombres sin principios, y perdáis pie». 

Mientras vivamos en este mundo necesitaremos prudencia vigilante y fortaleza de ánimo para vencer las tentaciones y realizar el bien que Dios espera de nosotros.

Y, como no podemos fiarnos de nuestras propias fuerzas, lo más prudente es repetir cada día: «no nos dejes caer en la tentación». 

«¡Dichosa tú, santa María Virgen, porque, sin morir, has merecido la palma del martirio, junto a la cruz del Señor!»

Saints Marcellin and Peter, martyrs

In celebrating the memory of the saints Marcellin and Peter, who suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Diocletian, in the third century, we remember that a Christian must be willing to die before denying Christ.

As the power of darkness continues to operate in the world, acting with justice and righteousness is not always free. Being a Christian means being willing, like Christ, to pay the price of pain, misunderstanding, and even death "because of righteousness."

We have read in the second letter of Saint Peter, "Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position."

As we live in this world, we will need vigilant prudence and moral strength to overcome temptations and do the good that God expects of us.

Since we can't trust our own strength, the wisest thing to do is to repeat every day, " lead us not into temptation,."

"Blessed are you, Holy Virgin Mary, because, without dying, you have deserved the palm of martyrdom, next to the Lord's Cross!"
