San Isidro

Amanece. ¡Oh nubes codiciosas de sol que, celosas, os interponéis entre el cielo y la tierra…! etc. Quiero decir que está todo añublado. 

7:00 

Misa del Papa en santa Marta y luego Oficio de lecturas y media hora mirando fijamente al sagrario. 

10:00

Llega Simon para pintar la puerta del coro. Le doy cincuenta euros -50€- para comprar bártulos. Llovizna. ¿Fina? Sí, muy fina. 

Hay que leer el ritual del Bautismo y preparar la admisión de Lorena al catecumenado. 

Será recibida en la puerta de la iglesia con su madrina. Le preguntaré que cómo se llama y me dirá que se llama Lorena. Le preguntaré qué pide a la Iglesia y me dirá que pide la fe. Le pereguntaré qué otorga la fe y me dirá que la vida eterna. Le preguntaré que si está dispuesta a empezar el camino del catecumenado guiada por Cristo y me dirá que sí. Preguntaré a la madrina que si está dispuesta a colaborar en la catequesis y me dirá que sí. 

Haré la oración de exorcismo Rechaza, Señor… soplando suavemente sobre ella que debe estar a más de dos metros de mí por el coronavirus. Aunque, como el soplo suave se puede omitir, a lo mejor lo omito por el coronavirus. 

La exhortaré a servir solo a Dios y a renunciar al diablo y a los cultos paganos, brujerías y maldades. 

Preguntaré a la madrina que si es testigo de la decisión de su ahijada y me dirá que sí. 

Hare la oración Te damos gracias

Signaré su frente sin tocarla por el coronavirus. No signaré sus sentidos por lo mismo. 

Haré la oración Escucha, Señor y le preguntaré si quiere recibir un nombre nuevo. (Tengo que preguntarle antes para evitar sorpresas).

La invitaré a entrar en la iglesia con su madrina para participar en la liturgia de la palabra. 

Después de la homilía le entregaré un rosario con su Cruz y todo y un evangelio.

Como no hay más que una catecúmena y si la despido se va a sentir muy sola, no la despediré y podrá asistir a la liturgia Eucarística desde su puesto y sin comulgar, claro. 

La Misa seguirá con el Credo porque todo esto tendrá lugar el próximo domingo, si Dios quiere.

Novena a santa Rita. 

Hace tiempo que Monsieur Montaigne, cuando voy a visitarlo, no se pone de pie para recibirme. Al principio lo hacía, aunque de mala gana, y murmuraba algunas palabras de bienvenida. La primera vez que, al entrar yo, se quedó sentado y siguió escribiendo como si nada, le pregunte: «¿Molesto?». No me dijo que no. Se limitó a leer en voz alta lo que estaba escribiendo: «Honro más a quienes honro menos; y allí donde mi alma avanza con júbilo, olvido los pasos de la compostura». Tomé nota y lo consideré un cumplido. 

Hoy estaba animadísmo y ha hablado por los codos de los italianos a los que considera «grandes impresores de cartas». Me ha mostrado algunos de los cien volúmenes de esas cartas que guarda en su biblioteca y, antes de entregarme el que contiene las de Aníbal Caro, lo ha besado exclamando: «¡Las mejores!». Mientras se inclinaba para besar el libro he observado que su calvicie va a más. 

¿Un poco de Dignidad? Sí, por favor. 

¡Mira! «Arte de vivir». Curiosa coincidencia porque hace un rato he comentado un «tweet» de Carlos Marín- Blázquez que, a su vez, comentaba otro de Enrique García Máiquez. Hablaban ellos de «ganarse la vida» y he terciado con un artículo de Javir Gomá que lleva ese título. 

Me hace gracia la imagen del artista que se preguntaba en su juventud con admiración entusiasta «¿por qué el ser y no la nada?» y que ahora, en su vejez, olvidado de todos, se pregunta por qué el ser se parece tanto a la nada. ¡Oh contingencia de los seres contingentes!

Mira, aquí cita a Montaigne. ¡Que coincidencia!

Me voy a Torremendo para la fiesta grande de San Isidro porque allí es patrono.

Misa de ocho en Torremendo. Acaba con tracas, cohetes y eso.

Vuelvo a San Miguel. Recojo una botella de cava que doña Nati me ha reservado porque es San Isidro. 

Un poco de poesía con cava. 

Termino Señor de los Balcones de José Luis Vidal Carreras pero aún hay tiempo para una segunda ronda de poesía. A ver qué guarda mi bodeguilla. ¡Mira! La senda oscura de Álvaro Petit Zarzalejos! Yo creía que este libro lo tenía en Alicante. Repasemos, pues.

¡Mira! ¡Dedicado! 

En el primer poema pinta la senda oscura por la que no transitan caballos ni carros ni bestia alguna.

… Solo el hombre

un hombre desquiciado que otoñea. 

Segundo poema. Hemos llegado al medio del camino y hay que dormir. Durmamos. ¡Toma! ¡Un sueño! Una mujer que solicita un beso y otro y otro antes de que su cuerpo se desvanezca y vuelva

tan solo eso: una lacrimosa sombra. 

Tercer poema. Al final del sendero, la tumba. Una tumba, por cierto, tan grande que cabría un mundo en ella y aún habría espacio para la oscuridad. 

Poema cuarto. A veces soñamos despiertos, como acariciando alguna posibilidad prometedora y, luego, nos asalta la inquietud de que, al abrir esa puerta,

no encuentre de ti ya rastro alguno.

La luz cae débil en Madrid. 

Mira ¡Madrid! ¡Y hoy es San Isidro! ¡Qué coincidencias! ¡Otra copita de cava! ¡Vivan San Isidro, Nati, Paco y Torremendo!

Martes de la quinta semana de Pascua

En la víspera de la Virgen de Fátima terminamos nuestra novena. Pero aún quedan muchos días del mes de mayo para contemplar a nuestra Madre que siempre nos da consuelo, alegría y paz.

Esta mañana el Papa comentaba las palabras de Jesús en su despedida: «La paz os dejo, mi paz os doy. No la doy como la da el mundo». 

La paz que da el mundo es la paz del comodón, del hombre que no quiere comprometerse con nada y, como suele decirse, enciende una vela a Dios y otra al diablo. Es la tranquilidad de quien viene a la Iglesia pero se maniente a una prudente distancia y nunca da un paso al frente cuando se trata de sacar adelante el trabajo de la evangelización.

En cambio la paz que viene de Dios es fruto de la fe y de la entrega de los santos que se dejan la piel. A esos Dios los bendice con una paz sobrenatural. 

Estamos leyendo en los Hechos de los Apóstoles cuántas penalidades pasaron para anunciar el Evangelio: cárceles, palizas, destierros, persecuciones… Sin embargo ellos estaban contentos de padecer por Cristo. Y esa paz, esa serenidad alegre solamente puede venir de Dios. Él no ahorra a los santos las dificultades —hay que pasar muchas tribulaciones para entrar en el Reino de Dios—- pero los recompensa y los sontiene con una paz que el mundo no puede dar.

Ho se cumplen ciento seis años del nacimiento del beato Álvaro del Portillo. Con motivo de su beatificación en 2014, el Papa Francisco escribió una carta al Prelado del Opus Dei comentando una jaculatoria que solía repetir don Álvaro: «Señor: gracias, perdón, ayúdame más». 

La gratitud es lo primero que sale del corazón del hijo de Dios. Luego la petición de perdón porque, dice el Papa, el cristiano no se hunde en el abismo de sus culpas sino que acude a su Padre Dios con la sencillez de un niño para decir «perdón» sabiendo que Él lo espera con los brazos abiertos. Y «ayúdame más» porque en el camino hacia el Cielo no podemos dar un paso si no vamos de su mano.

Podemos terminar nuestra novena pidiendo a la Virgen de Fátima, que en su última aparición se presentó como la Virgen del Rosario, que lleve hasta Dios esta oración nuestra: «Gracias, perdón, ayúdame más».

Tuesday of the fifth week of Easter

On the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima we finish our Novena. But there are still many days of the month of May to contemplate our Mother who always gives us comfort, joy and peace.

This morning the Pope commented on the words of Jesus in His farewell, "Peace I leave you, My peace I give you. I don't give it as the world gives it."

The peace that the world gives is the peace of the man installed in his comfort, of the man who does not want to commit himself to anything and, as they say, lights a candle to God and another to the devil. It is the tranquillity of those who come to the Church but remain at a prudent distance and never take a step forward when it comes to carrying out the work of evangelisation.

On the other hand, the peace that comes from God is the fruit of faith and the fight of the saints who break their backs for the Kingdom. God bless them with a supernatural peace.

We are reading in the Acts of the Apostles how many hardships they passed to announce the Gospel: jails, beatings, exiles, persecutions ... However they were happy to suffer for Christ.That peace, that joyous serenity can only come from God. He does not spare the saints difficulties - it takes many tribulations to enter the Kingdom of God,  but He rewards them and sustains them with a peace that the world cannot give.

One hundred and six years have passed since the birth of Blessed Álvaro del Portillo. On the occasion of his beatification in 2014, Pope Francis wrote a letter to the Prelate of Opus Dei commenting on a short prayer that Don Álvaro used to repeat, "Lord, thank you, forgive me, help me more."

Gratitude is the first thing that comes from the heart of the child of God. Then the request for forgiveness because, says the Pope, the Christian does not sink into the abyss of his guilt, but goes to his Father God with the simplicity of a child to say "forgive me" knowing that God awaits him with open arms. And "help me more" because on the way to Heaven we cannot take a step if we do not go hand in hand with Him.

We can finish our novena by asking the Virgin of Fatima who, in Her last appearance, presented Herself as the Virgin of the Rosary to take this prayer of ours to God: "Thank you, forgive me, help me more."

Lunes de la quinta semana de Pascua

Jesús se despide de sus discípulos y les anuncia que, cuando Él se vaya, el Paráclito, el Espíritu Santo será su maestro interior, el que les enseñará, los guiará y avivará su memoria. 

A veces podemos sentir que nuestra vida se ha vuelto rutinaria y monótona. No hay en ella novedad ni alegría. Puede ser señal de que hemos abandonado la oración y el trato con el Espíritu Santo que pone fuego, calor y alegría en el corazón de los santos.

En el hogar de Nazaret no hay riquezas ni comodidades. José es el atesano de un villorrio perdido. ¿De Nazaret puede salir algo bueno? Todos los días hay que ir a buscar agua a la fuente, cuidar del huerto y de los animales domésticos. Allí apenas llegan llegan noticias y todos los días son iguales. Pero la Sagrada Familia vive en unión con Dios que hace nuevas todas las cosas. En aquel hogar aparentemente gris se vive a diario una aventura secreta, escondida en Dios. 

La Virgen parece tener predilección por esas almas simples de los niños. Lucía, Francisco y Jacinta no habían salido jamás de su pueblo pero desde su primer encuentro con la Virgen se nota en ellos la acción del Espíritu Santo y su docilidad a la gracia. 

Este mes de mayo puede ayudarnos a renovar la fuente interior de nuestra alegría cristiana si nos hacemos niños y acudimos a la Virgen con sencillez, como nos ha pedido el Papa Francisco.

Bajo tu amparo nos acogemos Santa Madre de Dios. No desatiendas nuestras plegarias en la tribulación y de todo peligro líbranos siempre, Virgen pura y bendita.

Monday of the fifth week of Easter

At His farewell, Jesus announces to His disciples that, when He leaves, the Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, will be their Intimate Master, the One Who will teach them, guide them and revive their memories..

Sometimes we can feel that our life has become routine and monotonous. There is no novelty or joy in it. It may be a sign that we have abandoned prayer and friendship with the Holy Spirit who puts fire, warmth and joy into the hearts of the saints.

In Jesus’ Home there are no riches or comforts. Joseph is the craftsman of a sleepy hamlet. Can something good come out of Nazareth? Every day, one has to find water at the source and take care of the garden and the domestic animals. News does not arrive there and every day is the same. But the Holy Family live in union with God, Who makes all things new. In that apparently grey home, a secret adventure is lived daily, hidden in God.

The Virgin seems to have a predilection for the simple souls of children. Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta had never left their village, but since their first encounter with the Virgin, the action of the Holy Spirit and their docility to grace are noted in them.

This month of May can help us to renew the inner source of our Christian joy if we become children and go to the Virgin with simplicity, as Pope Francis has asked us.

Beneath Thy protection, we take refuge, Holy Mother of God; do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

Domingo de la V semana de Pascua

Esta mañana en Santa Marta, el Papa comentaba el discurso de despedida de Jesús que hemos leído en el evangelio: «Me voy al Padre, lo que pidáis en mi Nombre yo lo haré».

El Padre —decía el Papa Francisco— es el que cuida de los lirios del campo y los viste como ningún rey del mundo se ha vestido jamás. Es el que alimenta a los pájaros del cielo que no siembran ni siegan ni cosechan en sus graneros. Y es el que dice que nosotros, los hombres, somos ante sus ojos más valiosos que las hierbas del campo y que los pájaros del cielo. El Padre es el Dios providente y amoroso en quien podemos abandonaros con una confianza total. 

Jesús dice a sus discípulos «creéis en Dios, creed también en Mí. En la casa de mi Padre hay muchas moradas». Los invita a confiar en Aquel que es omnipotente y al coraje, a la audacia de ponerse en su presencia para orar. 

Hace falta —decía el Papa— coraje para orar como Abraham que se puso en la presencia de Dios para negociar la salvación de Sodoma. Para quedarse en casa quejándose de lo mal que va el mundo y de lo mal que lo hacen todo los políticos no hace falta coraje. Para ponerse delante de Dios y luchar con Él hace falta audacia y compromiso personal. Lo mismo hizo Moisés. No se desentendió del Pueblo de Dios, se puso ante Dios para interceder por él. 

Luego el Papa comentaba el pasaje de los Hechos de los Apóstoles que nos habla de un problema surgido en la primera Iglesia. El número de los discípulos había crecido, los Apóstoles no daban abasto y había algunas quejas. Los de lengua griega pensaban que sus viudas no eran atendidas en el servicio diario. Los Apóstoles, entonces, proponen una solución; que elijan a siete varones de fuena fama y llenos de espíritu y sabiduría para que se ocupen de esa diaconía, de ese servicio, de modo que los mismos Apóstoles puedan dedicarse a su misión: la oración y el servicio de la palabra. Eligieron a siete diáconos y los Apóstoles les impusieron las manos. 

Concluía el Papa diciendo que esa es la primera tarea del obispo: orar y anunciar la palabra. El Espíritu Santo nos enseña que es Dios quien hace las cosas y el mismo Espíritu Santo infunde en la Iglesia la audacia de la oración. 

¿Qué hizo la Virgen María en Caná de Galilea cuando observó que faltaba el vino? No se quejó, no murmuró de la organización, acudió a su Hijo y no se dsanimó cuando Jesús le dijo que aún no había llegado su hora sino que, por decirlo así, lo obligó a hacer el milagro. 

¿Qué pidió la Virgen de Fátima a Lucía, a Francisco y a Jacinta? Lo mismo que nos pide a nosotros. Les pidió que tuvieran el coraje de sufrir con paciencia y de rezar con fe. 

Virgen de Fátima, Madre nuestra, auxilio de los cristianos, ruega por nosotros.

Sunday of the fifth week of Easter

This morning in Santa Marta, Pope Francis commented on the farewell speech of Jesus that we have read in the Gospel: "I am going to the Father, what you ask in my Name I will do."

The Father, said Pope Francis, is the One who cares for the lilies of the field and dresses them like no king of the world has ever dressed. He is the One who feeds the birds of the sky that do not sow or reap or harvest in their barns. And he is the One who says that we men are more valuable in His eyes than the herbs of the field and the birds of the sky. The Father is the provident and loving God in Whom we can abandon ourselves with total trust.

Jesus says to his disciples, "You believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father's house there are many dwellings". He invites them to trust in Him who is omnipotent and to be courageous with the audacity to stand in His presence to pray.

The Pope said, it takes courage to pray like Abraham who places himself in the presence of God to negotiate the salvation of Sodom. To stay at home complaining about how bad the world is going and how badly all politicians do, it does not take courage. To stand before God and fight with Him, it takes boldness and personal commitment. Moses did the same. He did not disregard the People of God, he placed himself before God to intercede for them.

Then the Pope commented on the passage in the Acts of the Apostles that tells us about a problem that arose in the first Church. The number of the disciples had grown, the Apostles were not enough and there were some complaints. Those of Greek language thought that their widows were not taken care of in the daily service. The Apostles, then, propose a solution; that they elect seven men of great fame and full of spirit and wisdom to take care of that diakonia, of that service, so that the Apostles can dedicate themselves to their mission: prayer and the service of the word. They chose seven deacons and the Apostles laid their hands on them.

The Pope concluded by saying that this is the first task of the bishop, to pray and announce the word. The Holy Spirit teaches us that it is God who does things and the Holy Spirit himself instils in the Church the audacity of prayer.

What did the Virgin Mary do at Cana in Galilee when she observed that the wine was missing? She did not complain, She did not murmur about the organization, She went to Her Son and She was not discouraged when Jesus told Her that His time had not yet come but, so to speak, forced Him to perform the miracle.

What did the Virgin of Fatima ask Lucía, Francisco and Jacinta? The same thing She asks of us. She asked them to have the courage to suffer with patience and to pray with faith.

Jueves de la semana IV de Pascua

El 13 de mayo de 1917 Lucía, Francisco y Jacinta vieron por primera vez a la Virgen. Un mes después, el 13 de junio, la Virgen se les apareció de nuevo. 

La primera vez les dijo tres cosas: «No tengáis miedo, rezad el rosario, los tres iréis al Cielo». Y les preguntó una cosa: «¿Estáis dispuestos a sufrir por la conversión de los pecadores?»

La segunda vez les dijo: «Quiero que recéis el rosario y que aprendáis a leer. A Francisco y a Jacinta los llevaré al Cielo muy pronto».

Los que no conocen a Jesús pueden extrañarse: ¿por qué les dice que recen el rosario y que aprendan a leer si se los va a llevar pronto al Cielo? 

A los que conocemos a Jesús nos parece de lo más normal porque sabemos que Jesús, siendo el Hijo de Dios, tuvo que aprender a rezar como rezan los hombres y tuvo que aprender a trabajar y a estudiar como trabajan y estudian los hombres, con esfuerzo. Siendo Hijo de Dios no despreció la oración de los hombres sino que la inspiró y enseñó a sus discípulos a orar con el padrenuestro, uniendo al movimiento de los labios el afecto del corazón. Siendo Hijo de Dios no depreció el trabajo de los hombres sino que aprendió un oficio manual y aprendió, también a leer. 

De modo que no tiene nada de raro que la Madre de Dios pida estas dos cosas a los niños: que recen el rosario y que aprendan a leer. 

Como estamos haciendo esta novena también nosotros queremos hacernos niños para asomarnos a la casa de Nazaret. María y José se inclinan ante el Niño para lavarlo, peinarlo y vestirlo. Con amor se ponen a su altura para enseñarle a hablar, a rezar, a trabajar, a leer… Y Jesús, aunque es solo un Niño, sabe que ha venido al mundo para ponerse a nuestra altura, para lavarnos del pecado, vestirnos de santidad y enseñarnos a rezar y a vivir como hijos de Dios. Por eso, después de lavar los pies a sus discípulos les dirá: «Ahora que sabéis lo que tenéis que hacer, dichosos vosotros si lo ponéis en práctica». 

Madre del Rosario, te pedimos que nuestras parroquias y nuestras casas sean como vuestra casa de Nazaret, alegres en la pobreza, serenas en el trabajo, confiadas en la oración.

Thursday of fourth Easter Week.

On May 13th, 1917, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta saw the Virgin for the first time. One month later, on June 13th, the Virgin appeared to them again.

The first time She said three things to them, "Do not be afraid, pray the rosary, you will go to Heaven." She asked them one thing, "Are you willing to suffer for the conversion of sinners?"

The second time She said to them, "I want you to pray the rosary and learn to read. I will take Francisco and Jacinta to Heaven very soon."

Those who do not know Jesus may be surprised. Why does She tell them to pray the rosary and learn to read if She is going to take them to Heaven soon? But for us it is nothing strange because we know that Jesus, being the Son of God, had to learn to pray as men pray and He had to learn to work and study as men work and study, with effort. Being the Son of God, He did not despise the prayer of men, but inspired it and taught His disciples to pray with the Our Father, accompanying the movement of the lips with the affection of the heart. Being the Son of God, he did not depreciate the work of men, but learned a manual trade  and learned, also to read.

So it is not strange for the Mother of God to ask these two things of children: that they pray the rosary and that they learn to read.

As we are doing this novena we also want to become children to enter the house of Nazareth. Mary and Joseph bow to the Child to wash, comb and dress Him. With love they lower themselves to His height to teach Him to speak, to pray, to work, to read... Although He is only a Child, Jesus knows that He has come into the world to lower Himself to our height and thus wash us from sin, clothe us with holiness and teach us to live as children of God. Therefore, after washing the feet of his disciples, He will say to them, "Now that you know what you have to do, blessed are you if you put it into practice."

Mother of the Rosary, we ask that our parishes and our houses be like your house in Nazareth, blissful in poverty, serene in work and confident in prayer.

Martes de la IV semana de Pascua

Segundo día de la novena a la Virgen de Fátima. Sabemos que se apareció a Lucía que tenía entonces diez años y a sus primos Francisco y Jacinta. Se les apareció el 13 de mayo de 1917 y les dijo que volvería a verlos el trece de cada mes durante seis meses. 

Como eran niños y, además, eran pastores entendían muy bien las palabras de Jesús: «Yo soy el Buen Pastor… Mis ovejas escuchan mi voz, y yo las conozco, y ellas me siguen».

También nosotros en mayo y en la novena a la Virgen de Fátima queremos hacernos niños para estar en Nazaret con Jesús, con la Virgen y  con san José. 

Han llegado unos pastores con sus rebaños y todos los niños de Nazaret salen a ver el espectáculo y a oír historias de pastores. Jesús también va. Allí oyen esa vieja historia que cuenta que dos pastores se peleaban por una oveja. Un pastor anciano mandó que le dieran la oveja y que cada uno se alejase cien pasos en direcciones opuestas. Luego les pidió que llamasen a la oveja y el animal no dudó sino que fue derecho a su pastor en cuanto oyó su voz. 

Jesús Niño oye estas historias. Sabe que su Padre quiere hacerlo Pastor de su rebaño. Él se alegra porque ama a su Padre y quiere hacer su voluntad. Es un Niño pero ya está dispuesto a dar la vida por sus ovejas. Sabe que lo que su Padre le ha confiado vale más que todas la cosas y no cambiaría por nada del mundo su oficio de Pastor. 

Él tendrá que poner la voz, su Padre pondrá el Espíritu. Así, cuando los hombres escuchen la voz de Jesús, si tienen el Espíritu de Dios, reconocerán al Buen Pastor y lo seguirán. 

Decimos que no hay peor sordo que quien no quiere oír porque el corazón puede rechazar la verdad que los oídos han escuchado. Cuando no queremos aceptar la verdad de nada sirven con nosotros las palabras.  Y esto es aún más cuerto cuando se trata de la verdad revelada que no se puede entender sin la luz de la fe. 

Cuando Jesús habló del bautismo, de la eucaristía, de la penitencia o del matrimonio nadie lo entendió a la primera. Nicodemo, que era maestro, no lo entendió a la primera. Nadie lo entendió pero unos, oyendo la voz del Buen Pastor, abrieron sus corazones al Espíritu Santo y empezaron a seguir a Jesús mientras que otros, cerrando el corazón al Espíritu Santo, se propusieron acabar con Él. 

Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, intercede por nosotros para que nuestros corazones, como el tuyo, sean siempre dóciles a la acción del Espíritu Santo. Bendita entre todas la mujeres, ruega por nosotros.

Easter Tuesday IV

The second day of the novena to Our Lady of Fatima. We know that She appeared to Lucia, who was then ten years old, and to her cousins ​​Francisco and Jacinta. She appeared to them on May 13, 1917 and told them that She would see them again on the thirteenth of each month for six months.

As they were children and, furthermore, they were shepherds, they understood very well the words of Jesus, "I am the Good Shepherd… My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

In May and in the novena to Our Lady of Fatima we also want to become children to be in Nazareth with Jesus, with the Virgin and with Saint Joseph.

Some shepherds have arrived with their flocks and all the children of Nazareth come out to see the show and hear tales of shepherds. Jesus also goes. They hear there the old story that tells of two shepherds fighting over a sheep. An elderly shepherd ordered the animal to be given to him. Then asked the shepherds to walk a hundred paces in opposite directions. Finally he asked them to call the animal and she did not hesitate but went straight to her shepherd as soon as she heard his voice.

Jesus as a Child hears these stories. He knows that His Father wants to make Him a Shepherd of his flock. He is happy because He loves His Father and wants to do His will. He is a Child but He is ready to give His life for His sheep. He knows that what His Father has entrusted to Him is worth more than all things and He would not change His job as Pastor for anything in the world.

He will have to speak with His voice, His Father will speak through the Spirit. Thus, when men hear the voice of Jesus, if they have the Spirit of God, they will recognise the voice of the Good Shepherd and will follow Him.

We say that there is no worse deaf person than one who does not want to hear because the heart can reject the truth which has come through the ears. When we don't want to accept the truth, words are useless. This is even truer when it comes to the revealed truth, because it cannot be understood without the light of faith.

When Jesus spoke of baptism, the Eucharist, penance or marriage, nobody understood it the first time. Nicodemus, who was a teacher, did not understand it the first time. No one understood it, but some hearing the Good Shepherd voice opened their hearts to the Holy Spirit and began to follow Jesus, while others, closing their hearts to the Holy Spirit, decided to kill Him.

Mother of God and our Mother, intercede for us so that our hearts, like yours, are always docile to the action of the Holy Spirit. Blessed among all women, pray for us.

Lunes de la III semana de Pascua

Hoy empezamos la novena a la Virgen de Fátima. Algunos me habéis mandado fotos de los altares que estais preparado en vuestras casas para que se note que es mayo y, desde aquí, los he bendecido. 

Seguimos leyendo el discurso del Buen Pastor en el capítulo 10 de san Juan.

Pensemos en Jesús a los diez o doce años. Está creciendo en Nazaret. Ya puede ayudar en algunos trabajos de la casa y empieza a aprender el oficio de José en el taller. Como todos los niños, Jesús observa con curiosidad las cosas que le rodean pero no se queda en la superficie de las cosas porque en todo ve la mano de su Padre, Dios.

Un día cerca de Nazaret se reunen varios pastores con sus rebaños. Jesús y los otros niños salen a ver el espectáculo y a oir las historias de los pastores. Uno cuenta cómo contrató a un ayudante para pastorear su rebaño y cómo el primer día que aparecieron los lobos, el ayudante salió corriendo y lo dejó solo. 

Jesús oye estas historias y va creciendo en sabiduría. Claro, al asalariado solamente le importa el salario, no las ovejas. No va a dar la vida por ellas. Luego, vuelve a casa, cuenta a María y a José lo que ha visto y oído. Ellos lo miran con cariño y también le cuentan cosas de su infancia, de Herodes, de Egipto…

Es un niño pero en lo más hondo de su corazón ya sabe que está llamado a ser el Buen Pastor de todos, incluso de María y de José. Sabe que el Buen Pastor es el que da la vida por las ovejas y que para eso ha venido Él al mundo, para que todos tengan vida abundante. 

En este mes de mayo también nosotros, como niños, vamos a contarle a la Virgen y a san José las cosas que hacemos, lo que aprendemos, lo que nos pasa. Es una manera estupenda de hacer oración: ir corriendo a la Virgen para contarle, como hacen los niños con sus madres, todas las cosas del día. Ella y san José nos escucharán con una gran sonrisa y nos contarán cosas de Jesús que no se pueden aprender en los libros. Cosas que ellos solamete cuentan a los niños.

Monday of the third week of Easter

Today we begin the novena to Our Lady of Fatima. Some of you have sent me photos of the altars that you are preparing in your houses so that it is seen that we are in May and, from here, I have blessed them.

We continue reading the Good Shepherd's speech in chapter 10 of Saint John.

Let's think of Jesus when He is ten or twelve years old. He is growing in Nazareth. Now He can help with some housework and begins to learn Joseph's job in the workshop. Like all children, Jesus observes  with curiosity the things that surround Him but  His thoughts do not stay on the surface of things because in everything He sees the hand of his Father, God.

One day near Nazareth several shepherds gather with their flocks. Jesus and the other children go out to watch the show and listen to the stories of the shepherds. One tells how he hired an assistant to watch his flock and how the first day the wolves appeared, the salaried assistant ran out  from there and left him alone.

Jesus hears these stories and grows in wisdom. Of course,  the salaried assistant only cares about the salary, not the sheep. He will not risk his life for them. Then He comes home, tells Mary and Joseph what He has seen and heard. They look at Him with affection and also tell Him things about His childhood, about Herod, about Egypt ...

He is a child but in the depths of His heart He already knows that He is called to be the Good Shepherd of everyone, including Mary and Joseph. He knows that the Good Shepherd is the one who gives his life for the sheep and that is why He has come into the world, so that everyone has abundant life.

In this month of May we, as children, are also going to tell the Virgin and Saint Joseph the things we do, what we learn, what happens to us. It is a wonderful way to pray, running to the Virgin to tell Her, as children do with their mothers, all the things of the day. She and Saint Joseph will listen to us with a big smile and will tell us things about Jesus that cannot be learned in books. Things they only tell children.
