Jueves de la décima segunda semana del Tiempo Ordinario

La virtud de la prudencia primero se detiene a pensar pero luego, cuando ve lo que hay que hacer, se pone a hacerlo sin demora.

Un joven bueno, noble y sincero está hablando de su ideales. Sueña con un mundo mejor, más justo y solidario. De pronto interviene su madre: «Oye, todo eso está muy bien y ojalá conserves siempre esas grandes ambiciones y esas buenas intenciones. Pero ahora, por favor, ve a recoger tu habitación que está hecha una leonera. Y luego ponte a estudiar porque mañana tienes un examen».

Esa madre está enseñando a su hijo la verdadera prudencia que nos pone en contacto con la realidad y despierta en nosotros el sentido del deber concreto, de lo que hay que hacer aquí y ahora. 

Nuestra Madre, la Iglesia, como Santa María, es Virgen prudentísima. Nunca olvida la Palabra de Dios, la escucha y la guarda en el corazón pero no se queda en eso sino que la pone en práctica hasta en lo más pequeño y nos enseña a hacer lo mismo. Por eso, cuando sus hijos empezamos a hablar de grandes ideales ella nos recuerda nuestros deberes inmediatos, humildes, pequeños y concretos: oír Misa entera todos los domingos y fiestas de guardar; confesar los pecados mortales al menos una vez al año,  en peligro de muerte o si se ha de comulgar; comulgar por Pascua; ayunar y abstenerse de comer carne los días señalados para eso; ayudar a la Iglesia en sus necesidades. 

Cuando los padres, los maestros, los catequistas y los sacerdotes nos olvidamos de cumplir y de enseñar estos pequeños deberes y nos pasamos el día hablando de paz, de amor y de libertad estamos edificando sobre arena. Por eso, después de años de catequesis, los niños hacen la primera comunión y no vuelven más y nosotros mismos, ante la menor sacudida, vemos como se derrumba el edificio de nuestra vida cristiana. 

Virgen Prudentísima que escuchas y pones por obra la Palabra de Dios, ayúdamos a perseverar, como tú, en el cumplimiento humilde de nuestros deberes cristianos concretos y cotidianos.

Thursday of the twelfth week in Ordinary Time

The virtue of prudence first stops to think but then, when it sees what needs to be done, starts doing it without delay.

A good, noble and sincere young person is talking about his ideals. He dreams of a better, fairer and more supportive world. Suddenly his mother intervenes: "Hey, that is all very well and I hope you always keep those great ambitions and those good intentions. But now, please, go and tidy up your room which is mess. And then start studying because tomorrow you have an exam."

That mother is teaching her child the true prudence that puts us in touch with reality and awakens in us the sense of concrete duty, with what we must do here and now.

Our Mother, the Church, like Holy Mary, is the most prudent Virgin. She never forgets the Word of God, hears it, keeps it in her heart, puts it into practice even in the smallest detail and teaches us to do the same. For this reason, when her children begin to speak of great ideals, she reminds us of our immediate, humble, small and concrete duties: to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days; to confess once a year; to receive Holy Communion during paschal time; to keep the prescribed fasts; to help the Church in its needs.

When we parents, teachers, catechists and priests forget to fulfill and teach these little duties and we spend the day talking about peace, love and freedom we are building on sand. For this reason, after years of catechesis, the children make communion and disappear from the church, and ourselves at the slightest shake, we see how the building of our Christian life collapses.

Prudent Virgin who listens to and puts into action the Word of God, help us to persevere, like you, in the humble fulfillment of our concrete and daily Christian duties.
