Martirio de san Juan Bautista

Juan Bautista nació, como Jesús, en tiempos de Augusto. Su nacimiento, anunciado por un ángel, fue la respuesta de Dios a la oración de Isabel y de su esposo Zacarías que rompió a cantar, movido por el Espíritu Santo: «por la entrañable misercordia de nuestro Dios nos visitará el Sol que nace de lo alto para iluminar a los que viven en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte, para guiar nuestros pasos por el camino de la paz».  

Su ministerio público comenzó poco antes que el de Jesús, en tiempos de Tiberio. Llamaba a la conversión y bautizaba a los que venían a él. El mismo Jesús acudió al Jordán para ser bautizado por su primo que lo señaló como «el Cordero de Dios». Justo entonces podía considerarse terminada su misión. Había enseñado a orar a sus discípulos y les dijo refiriéndose a Jesús: «conviene que Él crezca y yo disminuya». 

Por su parte Jesús reconoció a Juan como profeta «y más que profeta», como el mayor de los nacidos de mujer y alabó su fidelidad: Juan no fue como los juncos que se inclinan en la dirección del viento sino que se atrevió a decir la verdad.

Herodes, que lo escuchaba con gusto, lo encerró y ordenó su muerte. 

Al celebrar hoy la memoria de su martirio pedimos por intercesión de Santa María que Cristo crezca en nosotros por nuestra fidelidad cotidiana al Evangelio.

Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist

John the Baptist was born, like Jesus, in the time of Augustus. His birth, announced by an angel, was God's answer to the prayer of Elizabeth and her husband Zacharias, who broke into singing, moved by the Holy Spirit: "Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us: To enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace."

His public ministry began shortly before that of Jesus, in the time of Tiberius. He called to conversion and baptized those who came to him. Jesus Himself went to the Jordan to be baptized by his cousin who presnted him as "the Lamb of God." Just then his mission could be considered finished. He had taught his disciples to pray and said referring to Jesus: "It is fitting that He increase and I decrease."

For his part, Jesus recognized John as a prophet "and more than a prophet," as the greatest of those born of woman and praised his fidelity: John was not like the reeds that lean in the direction of the wind, but he dared to speak the truth.

Herod, who was listening to him with pleasure, locked him up and ordered his death.

As we celebrate the memory of his martyrdom today, we ask through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary that Christ grow in us through our daily fidelity to the Gospel.
