San Lorenzo

El día 7 conmemorábamos el martirio del papa Sixto II y de cuatro de sus diáconos a mediados del siglo III, durante la persecución de Valeriano. Tres días después recordamos a san Lorenzo que fue el diácono a quien san Sixto había encargado la administración de los bienes de la Iglesia y la atención a los pobres de Roma. 

Por entonces se conservaba en Roma el cáliz que tuvo Nuestro Señor en  sus manos durante la Última Cena y el papa lo usaba para celebrar la Eucaristía. Por eso en la Plegaria Eucarística I, que es la que se recomienda hoy, en la fórmula de la consagración no se dice. como en las otras, que Jesús «tomó el cáliz» sino que «tomó este cáliz glorioso». 

Según una tradición, ante el peligro de que aquella reliquia fuera profanada, san Lorenzo se la entregó a un soldado que la trajo a España. Ahora el  santo Cáliz se venera en la catedral de Valencia. 

El martirio —nos ha dicho Benedicto XVI— se funda en la muerte de Cristo. La fuerza para afrontarlo procede de la íntima unión con Él y la serenidad que mostraron los mártires es un don de su gracia. No todos están llamados al martirio pero todos estamos llamados a la santidad que supone tomar la propia cruz cada día para seguir a Cristo. 

Por intercesión de Santa María pedimos que nuestra comunión diaria con el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo nos haga crecer en ese amor a Dios y al prójimo en el que consiste la santidad.

San Lorenzo

On the 7th we commemorated the martyrdom of Pope Sixtus II and four of his deacons in the middle of the third century, during the persecution of Valeriano. Three days later we remember Saint Lawrence, the deacon to whom Saint Sixtus had entrusted the administration of the Church's goods and the care of the poor of Rome.

At that time the chalice that Our Lord had in his hands during the Last Supper was kept in Rome and the Pope used it to celebrate the Eucharist. That is why in the formula of consecration of the Eucharistic Prayer I, which is the one recommended today, it is not said  as in the others, that Jesus "took the chalice" but rather "took this glorious chalice."

According to a tradition, in the face of the danger that that relic would be desecrated, Saint Lawrence gave it to a soldier who brought it to Spain. Now the holy chalice is venerated in the cathedral of Valencia.

Martyrdom - Benedict XVI has told us - is founded on the death of Christ. The strength to face it comes from the intimate union with Him and the serenity that the martyrs showed is a gift of his grace. Not all are called to martyrdom, but we are all called to the holiness that involves taking up one's own cross every day to follow Christ.

Through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, we ask that our daily communion with the Body and Blood of Christ may make us grow in that love for God and neighbor in which holiness consists.
