El primado de Pedro

Domingo vigésimo primero del Tiempo Ordinario

Movido por el Espíritu Santo, san Pedro confesó «Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo». Entonces Jesús le dio la suprema autoridad en la Iglesia para confirmar a sus hermanos en la fe y apacentar a sus ovejas. 

El que es la roca, Cristo, hizo a Pedro partícipe de su propia cualidad de cimiento y el que es el Buen Pastor, Cristo, lo hizo partícipe de su misión de pastor. 

Este primado de Pedro fue reconocido siempre por los primeros cristianos. 

En las listas de los apóstoles Pedro es mencionado en primer lugar; fue Pedro quien propuso elegir a otro apóstol para que ocupase el lugar de Judas; después de Pentecostés fue él quien dirigió la primera predicación apostólica y quien realizó el primer milagro; cuando Herodes quiso acabar con la Iglesia mandó encarcelar, precisamente, al primero de los apóstoles; con su autoridad se admitió en la iglesia a los gentiles bautizando al centurión Cornelio y se decidió no exigir la circuncisión a los cristianos procedentes del paganismo; finalmente el mismo san Pablo acudió dos veces a Pedro para asegurarse de que el Evangelio que él predicaba era el mismo que los Apóstoles habían recibido de Cristo. 

¿A qué podía deberse ese reconocimiento de Pedro como príncipe de los Apóstoles? Los evangelios no ocultan sus debilidades y limitaciones. Nos dicen que Jesús le dio la espalda diciendo «apártate de mí, Satanás» y que lo llamó «hombre de poca fe». Si todos reconocieron su autoridad fue por la misión que Cristo le encomendó.

El reconocimiento que tuvo Pedro entre los primeros cristianos lo tuvieron sus sucesores en Roma, los Papas, desde el principio. 

Renovamos hoy nuestra adhesión al Papa, sucesor de Pedro, y nuestra decisión de ir, como proponía san Josemaría «todos con Pedro a Jesús por María».

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Moved by the Holy Spirit, Saint Peter confessed "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Then Jesus gave him the supreme authority in the Church to confirm his brothers in the faith and feed his sheep.

The One who is the rock, Christ, made Peter a participant in His own foundation quality and the One who is the Good Shepherd, Christ, made him a participant in His mission as shepherd.

This primacy of Peter was always recognized by the early Christians.

In the lists of the apostles Peter is mentioned first; It was Peter who proposed choosing another apostle to take the place of Judas; after Pentecost it was he who led the first apostolic preaching and who performed the first miracle; when Herod wanted to put an end to the Church, he ordered the first of the Apostles to be imprisoned; With his authority the Gentiles were admitted into the church by baptizing the centurion Cornelius and it was decided not to demand circumcision from Christians from paganism; finally Saint Paul himself went to Peter twice to make sure that the Gospel that he preached was the same that the Apostles had received from Christ.

What could be due to this recognition of Peter as Prince of the Apostles? The gospels do not hide their weaknesses and limitations. We are told that Jesus turned his back on him saying "get behind me, Satan" and called him a "man of little faith." If everyone recognized his authority, it was because of the mission that Christ entrusted to him.

The recognition that Peter had among the first Christians was had by his successors in Rome, the Popes, from the beginning.

Today we renew our adherence to the Pope, Peter's successor, and our decision to go, as Saint Josemaría proposed "all with Peter to Jesus through Mary."
