San Agustín de Hipona

San Agustín de Hipona, Padre y Doctor de la Iglesia, nació en Tagaste en el año 354. Su madre, Mónica, era una fervorosa cristiana. Su padre, Patricio, venía del paganismo pero, gracias a santa Mónica, conoció la fe y fue admitido en la Iglesia como catecúmeno. Mónica quedó viuda muy joven con dos hijos y una hija. 

También Agustín fue admitido en el orden de los catecúmenos y en su alma nació un gran amor por Jesucristo aunque muy pronto se alejó de la Iglesia. Mantuvo una relación con una mujer de la que nació un hijo: Adeodato. 

El amor a la verdad lo llevó a emprender una larga búsqueda que lo condujo primero a la secta de los maniqueos. Por entonces era profesor de retórica en Cartago. Pronto se desengañó porque, como dejó escrito en sus Confesiones, aquellos hombres «decían ¡verdad! ¡verdad! Y la verdad no estaba en ellos». 

Viajó a Milán y el obispo de aquella sede, san Ambrosio, iba a cambiar su vida. Al principio acudía a la catedral para disfrutar de la brillante oratoria del santo obispo pero en seguida la predicación empezó a iluminarlo. Tenía 32 años cuando, por fin, recibió el bautismo. 

De regreso a África, en el puerto de Ostia, murió su madre. Ya en Hipona fundó un monasterio, fue ordenado sacerdote y luego obispo. Gobernó la diócesis durante treinta y cinco años, hasta su muerte. 

Por intercesión de Santa María pedimos a Dios ese amor a la Verdad que guio a san Agustín hasta Jesucristo.

Saint Augustine of Hippo

Saint Augustine of Hippo, Father and Doctor of the Church, was born in Tagaste in 354. His mother, Monica, was a fervent Christian. His father, Patrick, came from paganism but, thanks to Saint Monica, he knew the faith and was admitted to the Church as a catechumen. Monica was soon widowed with two sons and one daughter.

Augustine, too, was admitted to the order of catechumens and a great love for Jesus Christ was born in his soul, although he soon left the Church. He had a relationship with a woman from whom a son was born: Adeodato.

The love of the truth moved him to undertake a long search that led him first to the sect of the Manicheans. At that time he was a professor of rhetoric in Carthage. He was disillusioned because, as he wrote in his Confessions, those men “said truth! truth! And the truth was not in them”.

He traveled to Milan and the bishop of that see, Saint Ambrose, was going to change his life. At first he used to go to the cathedral to enjoy the brilliant oratory of the holy bishop, until the preaching began to illuminate him. He was 32 when he finally received baptism.

Back in Africa, in the port of Ostia, his mother died. In Hippo he founded a monastery, was ordained a priest and then a bishop. He ruled the diocese for thirty-five years, until his death.

Through the intercession of Our Lady we ask God for that love of Truth that led Saint Augustine to Jesus Christ.
