Saint Camillus of Lelis

He was born in Italy in the middle of the 16th century. Until the age of twenty-five he participated as a mercenary soldier in various military campaigns.
In 1575 his conversion took place. He had lost his patrimony in a bet and, reduced to misery, he went to the hospital of San Giacomo of the Incurable sick, in Rome, where he himself had been recovering from an injury. But this time he was going to take care of the sick.
In Rome he met Saint Philip Neri, was ordained a priest and, with two companions, founded a congregation dedicated to caring for the sick "voluntarily, for the love of God and with the affection that a mother would put in caring for her only sick child."
When he died in 1614 he had founded fifteen houses of Servants of the Sick and eight hospitals. Members of the order numbered over two hundred.
Today the Camilli are more than a thousand. They work on five continents caring for and teaching others to care for the sick.
In the Encyclical "Deus caritas est", Benedict XVI mentioned Saint Camillus of Lelis among the "distinguished models of charity".
Through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel we ask today that the Lord sustain and reward the charity of those who dedicate themselves to serving Jesus in their sick brothers.

San Enrique

lunes, 13 de julio de 2020
San Enrique

2020 July 13th, Monday
Saint Henry

He was the grandson of Charlemagne and the son of the Dukes of Bavaria, the region of southern Germany that is still predominantly Catholic and where Benedict XVI was also born.
His education was carried out by Saint Wolfgang, Bishop of Regensburg. He inherited the Duchy of his father, was elected emperor by the German princes and crowned by Benedict VIII.
Being the most powerful man of his time he was known for his piety.
Along with his wife, Saint Cunegunda, he protected the Church, did great works of charity and won the love of his people. With his brother-in-law, King Saint Stephen, he promoted the conversion of Hungary.
He may remind us that also in the middle of the world, as the Collect prayer says, the Christian can rise to the contemplation of eternal things.

Through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel we ask God for the grace to remain united with Him in the midst of our ordinary work.

2020 July 12th, Sunday
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus speaks of the evangelizing task as a sowing. The seed is the Gospel and the soil is the disciple who has heard the Gospel of salvation.

First of all the disciple must learn the doctrine. If what we have heard does not remain in our memory and in our heart, it becomes like the seed that falls on the road and, bouncing, is at the mercy of the birds.
Saint John Paul II said that it is impossible for the flowers of faith and piety to sprout "in the desert spaces of a catechesis without memory."
The catechist who helps children, young people and adults to memorize the formulas of faith and dogma, the texts of the Mass and of Holy Scripture is carrying out an authentic sowing that, in due time, will bear fruit.
Faithful memory, the memory of doctrine, is so important that Jesus Himself promised His disciples that the Holy Spirit would come to their aid to remind them of what He had taught. In the parable of the sower, he compares the birds with the devil who snatches the word from the heart. In that way, He alerts us against the work of the evil spirit who wants us to forget, that we do not remember what we have learned.

Whoever has memorized the doctrine has already internalized it in some way. But what has been learned still needs to be meditated on in prayer for the truth to illuminate and guide our steps.
To pray is to listen again and internally consider what has been learned so that it takes root in us. Without prayer the disciple is like the stony ground where doctrine cannot take root and dries up.
That is why the catechist who teaches us to pray, to praise God with the psalms, to participate in the liturgy, to examine conscience, to meditate on the Gospel and to consider the dogmas of our faith is cooperating with the divine Sower.

The disciple has received the seed learning the doctrine and it has begun to take root in the depth of prayer but he must still watch so that the cares of the world and the love of wealth do not drown it.
In His prayer for His disciples, Jesus will address the Father saying: "I do not ask You to take them out of the world but to keep them from evil."
Thus the disciple must learn to live in the world without being worldly. Once again, the catechist will cooperate with the Sower if, giving an example of unity of life,  teaches us, as we have asked in the Collect prayer, to reject what is unworthy of the Christian name and to fulfill what is meant in it.

We continue preparing for the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. She is the "good soil" that - St Augustine said - conceived Christ by faith first in Her mind and then in Her body. Through Her intercession we ask God to help us learn his doctrine, meditate on it in our hearts and always be guided by it.

Prudentes y sencillos

2020 July 10th, Friday
Friday of the fourteenth week in Ordinary Time

We continue reading the missionary discourse of Jesus. He sends His disciples to evangelize, warns them of the difficulties and dangers that they will have to face and asks them to be prudent and simple.
Jesus spoke of the lilies of the field and the birds of the sky to teach His disciples to trust in God's providence, but it is clear that we do not have the model of that trust in the flowers or in the birds but in Jesus Himself. In Him — not in the serpents or in the  doves — we also find the model of a simple and prudent evangelizer.
He announces to the great and the little ones a simple gospel with simplicity. And He does it because, above all, He lives what He teaches: there is no deceit in Him.
His prudence is, on the one hand, realism. He does not come into the world trusting in the goodness of man but in the truth and in the power of His word that can change hearts. With this realism He advises His disciples not to look for danger and, even more, that, after announcing the Gospel, if they persecute them in one city, flee to another.
Romano Guardini wrote that "being prudent means telling the truth in such a way that it does not destroy but rather edifies." In this, too, Jesus is a model of a prudent man who puts the means to pave the way for the truth. His is not that prudence of the flesh that pretends to have everything controlled and planned, but the prudence of the Spirit that, in each case, shows what has to be said and what has to be done.
As we prepare for the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we ask God, through Her intercession, for that docility to the Holy Spirit, which made of Her the most prudent and simple Virgin.

2020 July 8th, Wednesday
Augustine Zhao and companions, martyrs

From the 7th century, when the first church was erected in China, until the 17th century, the number of Christians did not stop growing in that country, although slowly and with many difficulties.
It was in the 17th century when the Tatars murdered the Franciscan priest Francisco Fernández de Capillas, a Spanish missionary who had arrived in China from the Philippines.
San Francisco Fernández is the first of the one hundred and twenty martyrs in China whom we remember today. The last two are two Salesians, a bishop and a priest, martyred in 1930.
In the 1950s, communist authorities encouraged the creation of a national Church to divide Catholics and separate them from Rome, and only two years ago the Holy See and the People's Republic signed a Provisional Agreement on the appointment of bishops.
When Jesus sent his disciples to evangelize without taking money or even a second robe, he was already preparing them for the supreme witness of faith of the martyrs who, detached from everything, put their trust only in God.
We ask through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel  that God reward the fidelity of so many Chinese Catholics who persevere united to the rock of Peter on which the Church is built.

2020 July 8th, Wednesday
Wednesday of the fourteenth week in Ordinary Time

The Catechism of the Church teaches that ecclesial ministry has a collegial character.
Jesus instituted the Twelve as the seed of the New Israel and origin of the sacred hierarchy. He not only chose them together but also sent them together, so that their unity was at the service of the fraternal communion of all the faithful and was as a reflection of the communion of the divine Persons.
That is why the bishops exercise their ministry within the episcopal college, in communion with the Bishop of Rome, and the priests exercise theirs within the presbytery of the diocese, under the direction of their bishop.
Through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel we ask today that God enlighten the bishops, successors of the Apostles, and keep them in unity.

Exorcismo

2020 July 7th, Tuesday
Tuesday of the fourteenth week in Ordinary Time2020 July 7th, Tuesday
Tuesday of the fourteenth week in Ordinary Time

Exorcism is the prayer with which the Church publicly and authoritatively requests, in the name of Jesus Christ, that a person or object be protected against the influence of the devil and released from his domain.
The Catechism of the Church says, quoting Saint John, that the world lies under the power of the devil since the sin of our first parents and that this causes human history to be involved until the last day in a fight against the power of the darkness.
All of us already know that we can't hav holy water in the church basins while the threat of this pandemic lasts. But we can have holy water at home. Saint Teresa of Jesus always carried it with her.
At the end of the mass I will bless the water so that whoever wants it can take a  bottle home. After the blessing, that water will be a sacramental that will help us in our fight against the power of darkness.
Holy Mary, Queen of Angels, pray for us.

2020 July 6th, Monday
Saint Maria Goretti

Jesus recommends not facing the wicked and turning the other cheek. His words, misunderstood, could lead us to an absurd pacifism that has nothing of Christianity but, very much of cowardice. Because it is one thing to be willing to bear the affronts they do to us and another thing to remain passive in the face of evil. Jesus did not do the latter, nor recommend it and neither did the Saints act like that.
The wicked, in order to prevail, pretending to be victims, put on a good face. Sometimes they flatter us or make empty promises; at other times, they threaten us. The Christian fortitude, which always goes hand in hand with prudence, knows how to say "no" to the requests, flatteries and promises of the wicked and to stand firm even in the face of threats as did Saint Agnes, Saint Pelayo or Saint Maria Goretti whose memory we celebrate today.
None of these three saints reached the age of fifteen. Maria Goretti was eleven when a young neighbor tried to abuse her. With supernatural prudence and fortitude, Maria faced her attacker. When the man saw that he couldn't defeat her, he stabbed her. The girl died after a long and painful agony in which that supernatural fortitude manifested again along with the charity to forgive and the hope of Heaven.
Not even the holiest can know how he would react when his life is at stake. Therefore, because we know that our strength is very limited,, we do not seek martyrdom and we ask God not to let us fall into temptation.
We ask today, Through the intercession of the Virgin,  for that strength of Saint Maria Goretti which is always a gift from God.

Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan eran pescadores.
Llévanos a Jesús.

2020 July 5th, Sunday
Fourteenth Sunday in ordinary time

Peter, Andrew, James and John were fishermen. Matthew was a tax collector. All of them led a simple life, without great horizons and without great complications until Jesus called them, instructed them, sent them to preach and, ultimately, complicated their lives. But they, despite everything, despite the fact that they had never imagined that their lives would change so much and despite the difficulties were happy because they were with the Lord and because they loved Him with all their hearts.
This is the secret of the saints, a love so great  that it leads them to say, like Saint Paul: "to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
It should come as no surprise that following Christ is difficult and tiresome because Jesus does not call us to a comfortable and uncompromising life. He calls us to live according to the Holy Ghost, not according to the flesh. But if this following becomes a sad and overwhelming burden, it means that we have lost sight of the Lord.
No one can sustain the Christian struggle for long if it is not moved by love and not sustained by grace. For this reason, when we are tired we need to rest, going back to Jesus Who tells us: "Come to Me, all of you who are tired and burdened and I will relieve you."
"Rejoice, look at your king who comes to you just and victorious; poor and riding on a donkey."  Fall in love with Jesus, meek and humble of heart Who "will dictate peace to the nations" and Who calls us to live with Him, to fight alongside Him and to overcome with Him.
Mother of the Redeemer, Heaven's Door always open, help the people who fall and want to rise. Take us to Jesus.

2020 July 03rd, Friday
Saint Thomas the Apostle

Yesterday we read in the Gospel how they brought a paralytic before Jesus and how Jesus, seeing the faith they had, first healed the soul of the paralytic and then healed his body. Jesus praised many times the faith of those who came to Him and rebuked His own disciples for their unbelief. The evangelists could have tried to hide this unbelief from the apostles, but they did not because, among other things, Jesus used the weaknesses and shortcomings of his disciples to teach us all.
Today we find the incredulity of Thomas from which Jesus takes occasion to make another praise of the believers: "Happy are those who believe without having seen."
Almost two hundred years ago, Saint John Henry Newman observed that Thomas was not the only apostle who doubted the resurrection but his words,  "if I do not see the sign of the nails in His hands, if I do not put my finger in the hole of the nails and I don't put my hand on His side, I don't believe it",  express the attitude of someone who, instead of looking for the truth, sits comfortably waiting for all the evidence to be brought to him and, to put it so, to touch the truth with his hands.
In any case, that same stubbornness of the apostle served the Master to bless those who believe without having seen and gives us another proof of the firmness of our faith. Because the witnesses to the resurrection were not credulous people or easily willing to accept that Jesus had risen and, even so, having overcome their unbelief, they bore witness to the truth with their own lives.
In a certain way, the blessing that Jesus directs to those who believe without seeing is the one that Saint Elizabeth directed to our Mother, the Virgin Mary, when she exclaimed "blessed are you who have believed, because what the Lord has told you will be fulfilled." And it is the blessing that Saint Peter addressed to the first Christians who had not seen Jesus: "without having seen Him, you love Him and, without seeing Him, you believe in Him, and rejoice with unspeakable joy."
Through the intercession of the Virgin we ask that God make us worthy of this wonderful gift of the Catholic faith.

2020 July 02th, Thursday
Thursday of the thirteenth week in Ordinary Time

When Jesus says that "the Son of man has power to forgive sins on earth" He says it of Himself. He has that power and not only exercises it personally, "Courage, son! Your sins are forgiven", but "he gives men such power" to exercise it in His Name.
The whole Church is a sign and instrument of God's forgiveness, but Jesus entrusted the exercise of the power of absolution to the apostles when he said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
Pope Francis has reminded us that the sacrament of Reconciliation is a sacrament of healing and that his best image is this episode of the healing of the paralytic where the Lord reveals Himself as a Physician to souls and bodies.
Holy Mary, health of the sick and refuge of sinners take us to Jesus.

2020 July 1st Wednesday
Wednesday of the thirteenth week in Ordinary Time

The Catechism of the Church says that the power of the devil is not infinite because he is not God but just a very intelligent creature, after all, a creature.
Should we be afraid of the devil?
In the Gospel we read that Jesus was passing near a cemetery and that "two demoniacs came out to meet Him" and that they were "so furious that no one dared to go down that road."
Fury is the devil's weapon to scare us. Who dares to face the fury of the enemies of Christ who try to intimidate us? Who dares to face the fury of those who dictate to us what can and cannot be said?
The same Gospel tells us that Jesus was not only not afraid of the demonized  nor the devil, but He freed the demonized and defeated the devil.
To that we are all called. We have to dare to pass, with Jesus, through all the ways of the earth. Above all, we have to dare to go with Jesus along those roads that no one dares to go through for fear of the fury of demons.
In order not to be afraid of anything, one must to be a child of that Woman, of that Mother who crushed the serpent's head.
Virgo potens, Powerful Virgin, pray for us.
