Agustín Zhao y compañeros, mártires

Desde el siglo VII, cuando se erigió la primera iglesia en China, hasta el siglo XVII el número de los cristianos no dejó de crecer en aquel país aunque lentamente y con muchas dificultades.

Fue en el siglo XVII cuando los tártaros asesinaron al sacerdote franciscano Francisco Fernández de Capillas, un misionero español que había llegado a China desde Filipinas.

San Francisco Fernández es el primero de los ciento veinte mártires de China a los que hoy recordamos. Los dos últimos son dos salesianos, un obispo y un sacerdote, martirizados en 1930. 

En los años cincuenta, las autoridades comunistas alentaron la creación de una Iglesia nacional para dividir a los católicos y separarlos de Roma y hace solamente dos años (2018) la Santa Sede y la República Popular firmaron un Acuerdo Provisional sobre el nombramiento de obispos. 

Cuando Jesús envió a sus discípulos a evangelizar sin llevar consigo dinero y ni siquiera una segunda túnica ya estaba preparándolos para el supremo testimonio de fe de los mártires que, desprendidos de todo, ponen su confianza solamente en Dios. 

Pedimos por la intercesión de la Virgen del Carmen que Dios premie la fidelidad de tantos católicos chinos que perseveran unidos a la roca de Pedro sobre la que está edificada la Iglesia.

Augustine Zhao and companions, martyrs

From the 7th century, when the first church was erected in China, until the 17th century, the number of Christians did not stop growing in that country, although slowly and with many difficulties.

It was in the 17th century when the Tatars murdered the Franciscan priest Francisco Fernández de Capillas, a Spanish missionary who had arrived in China from the Philippines.

San Francisco Fernández is the first of the one hundred and twenty martyrs in China whom we remember today. The last two are two Salesians, a bishop and a priest, martyred in 1930.

In the 1950s, communist authorities encouraged the creation of a national Church to divide Catholics and separate them from Rome, and only two years ago the Holy See and the People's Republic signed a Provisional Agreement on the appointment of bishops.

When Jesus sent his disciples to evangelize without taking money or even a second robe, he was already preparing them for the supreme witness of faith of the martyrs who, detached from everything, put their trust only in God.

We ask through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel  that God reward the fidelity of so many Chinese Catholics who persevere united to the rock of Peter on which the Church is built.
