Santa María Goretti

Jesús recomienda no hacer frente al malvado y poner la otra mejilla. Sus palabras, mal entendidas, podrían llevarnos a un absurdo pacifismo que nada tiene de cristiano y sí, mucho, de cobarde. Porque una cosa es estar dispuesto a soportar las afrentas que nos hagan y otra cosa es permanecer pasivo ante el mal. Esto último ni lo hizo Jesús, ni lo recomendó ni lo han hecho los santos.  

El malvado, para prevalecer, a veces ruega poniendo cara de bueno o, incluso, haciéndose la víctima,; otras veces halaga o hace promesas y, otras veces, amenaza. La fortaleza cristiana, que siempre va unida a la prudencia, sabe decir “no” a los ruegos, a los halagos y a las promesa del malvado y mantenerse firme incluso ante las amenazas como hicieron santa Inés, san Pelayo o santa María Goretti cuya memoria celebramos hoy. 

Ninguno de estos tres santos llegó a cumplir los quince años. María Goretti tenía once cuando, un joven vecino trató de abusar de ella. Con una prudencia y una fortaleza sobrenaturales María le hizo frente. Cuando aquel hombre vio que no podía con ella la acuchilló. La niña murió después de una agonía larga y dolorosa en la que volvió a manifestarse esa fortaleza sobrenatural junto con la caridad para perdonar y la esperanza del Cielo. 

Ni el más santo puede saber cómo reaccionaría cuando está en juego su vida. Por eso, porque sabemos que nuestras fuerzas son muy limitadas, no buscamos el martirio y pedimos a Dios que no nos deje caer en la tentación. 

Por intercesión de la Virgen pedimos hoy esa fortaleza de santa María Goretti que es, siempre, un don de Dios.

Saint Maria Goretti

Jesus recommends not facing the wicked and turning the other cheek. His words, misunderstood, could lead us to an absurd pacifism that has nothing of Christianity but, very much of cowardice. Because it is one thing to be willing to bear the affronts they do to us and another thing to remain passive in the face of evil. Jesus did not do the latter, nor recommend it and neither did the Saints act like that. 

The wicked, in order to prevail, pretending to be victims, put on a good face. Sometimes they flatter us or make empty promises; at other times, they threaten us. The Christian fortitude, which always goes hand in hand with prudence, knows how to say "no" to the requests, flatteries and promises of the wicked and to stand firm even in the face of threats as did Saint Agnes, Saint Pelayo or Saint Maria Goretti whose memory we celebrate today.

None of these three saints reached the age of fifteen. Maria Goretti was eleven when a young neighbor tried to abuse her. With supernatural prudence and fortitude, Maria faced her attacker. When the man saw that he couldn't defeat her, he stabbed her. The girl died after a long and painful agony in which that supernatural fortitude manifested again along with the charity to forgive and the hope of Heaven.

Not even the holiest can know how he would react when his life is at stake. Therefore, because we know that our strength is very limited,, we do not seek martyrdom and we ask God not to let us fall into temptation.

We ask today, Through the intercession of the Virgin,  for that strength of Saint Maria Goretti which is always a gift from God.
