Dichosos los que crean sin haber visto

Santo Tomás Apóstol

Ayer leíamos en el evangelio cómo llevaron ante Jesús a un paralítico y  cómo Jesús, viendo la fe que tenían, primero sanó el alma del parálitico y luego sanó su cuerpo. Jesús alabó muchas veces la fe de los que se acercaban a Él y reprendió a sus propios discípulos por su incredulidad. Los evangelistas podían haber tratatado de ocultar esta incredulidad de los apóstoles, pero no lo hicieron porque, entre otras cosas, Jesús se valió de las debilidades y defectos de sus discípulos para enseñarnos a todos. 

Hoy nos encontramos con la incredulidad de Tomás de la que toma ocasión Jesús para hacer otro elogio de los creyentes: «Dichosos los que crean sin haber visto». 

Hace casi doscientos años, san Juan Enrique Newman observaba que Tomás no fue el único apostol que dudó de la resurrección pero sus palabras —«si no veo en sus manos la señal de los clavos, si no meto el dedo en el agujero de los clavos y no meto la mano en su costado, no lo creo»— expresan la actitud de quien, en vez de buscar la verdad, se sienta a esperar cómodamente a que le traigan todas las pruebas y, por sí decirlo, a tocar la verdad con sus manos. 

En todo caso, esa misma obstinación del apóstol sirvió al Maestro para bendecir a los que creen sin haber visto y nos da a nosotros otra prueba de la firmeza de nustra fe. Porque los testigos de la resurrección no fueron personas crédulas y fácilmente dispuestas a aceptar que Jesús había resucitado y, aún así, vencida su incredulidad, dieron testimonio de la verdad con sus propias vidas. 

En cierto modo la bendición que Jesús dirige a quienes creen sin ver es la que santa Isabel dirigió a nuestra Madre, Santa María cuando exclamó «dichosa tú que has creído, porque lo que te ha dicho el Señor se cumplirá». Y es la que san Pedro dirigió a los primeros cristianos que no habían visto a Jesús: «sin haberlo visto, lo amáis y, sin verlo, creéis en El, y os alegráis con un gozo inefable».

Por intercesión de la Virgen pedimos que Dios nos haga dignos de este don maravilloso de la fe católica.

Saint Thomas the Apostle

Yesterday we read in the Gospel how they brought a paralytic before Jesus and how Jesus, seeing the faith they had, first healed the soul of the paralytic and then healed his body. Jesus praised many times the faith of those who came to Him and rebuked His own disciples for their unbelief. The evangelists could have tried to hide this unbelief from the apostles, but they did not because, among other things, Jesus used the weaknesses and shortcomings of his disciples to teach us all.

Today we find the incredulity of Thomas from which Jesus takes occasion to make another praise of the believers: "Happy are those who believe without having seen."

Almost two hundred years ago, Saint John Henry Newman observed that Thomas was not the only apostle who doubted the resurrection but his words,  "if I do not see the sign of the nails in His hands, if I do not put my finger in the hole of the nails and I don't put my hand on His side, I don't believe it",  express the attitude of someone who, instead of looking for the truth, sits comfortably waiting for all the evidence to be brought to him and, to put it so, to touch the truth with his hands.

In any case, that same stubbornness of the apostle served the Master to bless those who believe without having seen and gives us another proof of the firmness of our faith. Because the witnesses to the resurrection were not credulous people or easily willing to accept that Jesus had risen and, even so, having overcome their unbelief, they bore witness to the truth with their own lives.

In a certain way, the blessing that Jesus directs to those who believe without seeing is the one that Saint Elizabeth directed to our Mother, the Virgin Mary, when she exclaimed "blessed are you who have believed, because what the Lord has told you will be fulfilled." And it is the blessing that Saint Peter addressed to the first Christians who had not seen Jesus: "without having seen Him, you love Him and, without seeing Him, you believe in Him, and rejoice with unspeakable joy."

Through the intercession of the Virgin we ask that God make us worthy of this wonderful gift of the Catholic faith.
