Domingo vigésimo sexto del Tiempo Ordinario

«Hijo, ve hoy a trabajar a mi viña»

La parábola nos habla de la vocación cristiana como llamada a trabajar en la viña del Señor; una llamada que el mismo Dios dirige a sus hijos. El «hoy» se refiere a esta vida. 

En las respuestas de los hijos podemos reconocernos nosotros mismos. 

Hay un «sí» respetuoso pero que se queda en palabras. Es el «sí» que hemos podido dar alegremente en alguna vez en la vida y que ha quedado en nada en el momento de la verdad, en el momento del sacrificio personal. 

Hay un «no» rebelde que, sin embargo, deja paso a la reflexión y al arrepentimiento. El «no» que hemos dado a veces, quizá por miedo al compromiso, hasta que hemos recapacitado.

Cada época de la vida tiene sus tentaciones. Hay una rebeldía propia del joven, del que empieza a caminar por sí solo y ve en la vocación una amenaza para su libertad, para sus propios planes y sus sueños. Pero hay también una rebeldía propia del hombre maduro o, incluso, del anciano que ya ha recorrido un largo trecho y, en el medio del camino de la vida, o al final, piensa que ya ha hecho bastante de modo que, aunque empezó dando un «sí» generoso a Dios, ahora deja de atender a su llamada.

Frente a esas rebeldías está el ejemplo de Jesús cuyo paso por este mundo resume y canta San Pablo como una vida de perfecta obediencia al Padre. El «sí» de Jesús se mantiene desde el principio hasta la muerte de Cruz. Él puede decir que su alimento es hacer la Voluntad del Padre que lo ha enviado y no dirá «todo está cumplido» hasta el momento de la muerte. Solamente entonces, después de haber apurado el cáliz, añadirá con perfecto abandono: «Padre, a tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu». 

A nosotros nos viene bien rezar como el salmista: «No te acuerdes de los pecados de mi juventud». Aunque nunca hubiéramos pecado y fuéramos ya ancianos llenos de méritos, haríamos bien en en decir: «Señor, enséñame tus caminos, instrúyeme en tus sendas: haz que camine con lealtad». 

Santa María, Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros, pecadores, ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte.

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Son, go to work in my vineyard today"

The parable tells us about the Christian vocation as a call to work in the Lord's vineyard, a call that God Himself addresses to His children. That "today" refers to this life.

In the children's responses we can recognize ourselves.

There is a respectful "yes" but it ends in empty words. It is the "yes" that we, perhaps, have given at some point in life and that has come to nothing at the moment of truth, at the moment of the personal sacrifice. 

There is a rebellious "no" that, however, gives way to reflection and repentance. The "no" that we have sometimes given, perhaps out of fear of commitment, until we have reconsidered.

Every season of life has its temptations. There is a rebellion of the young man, who begins to walk on his own and sees his vocation as a threat to his freedom, to his own plans and dreams. But there is also a rebellion typical of the mature man or, even, of the old man who has already come a long way and in the middle of the path of life, or at the end, decides that he has already done enough and, if he started by saying a generous «yes» to God, now stops responding to that call.

Faced with these rebellions is the example of Jesus whose Life Saint Paul summarizes and sings as a Life of perfect obedience to the Father. The "yes" of Jesus is maintained from the beginning until the death on the Cross. He can say that His Food is to do the Will of the Father who has sent Him and He will not say "everything is accomplished" until the moment of death. Only then, after having drained the chalice, will He add with perfect abandon: "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit."

It would be good for us to pray like the psalmist: "Do not remember the sins of my youth." Even if we had never sinned and were already meritorious elders, we would do well to say: "Lord, teach me your ways, instruct me in your paths: make me walk with loyalty."

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
