San Francisco de Borja

Francisco, bisnieto del Papa Alejandro VI y del rey de Aragón, Fernando el Católico, nació en Gandía en 1510. Se educó en la corte del emperador Carlos y se casó con Leonor de Castro, dama de la emperatriz, con la que tuvo ocho hijos. 

Nombrado Virrey de Cataluña, al morir su padre heredó el título de duque de Gandía y se retiró a su ciudad natal donde fundó la Universidad. Tenía treinta y seis años cuando quedó viudo y decidió entrar en la Compañía de Jesús. Diecinueve años después fue elegido General de la Orden y ejerció el cargo durante siete años, hasta su muerte en 1572. 

San Ignacio de Loyola envió una carta a Carlos de Borja, marqués de Lombay y primogénito de san Francisco. En ella le recordaba que, si había heredado de su padre títulos y riquezas, había recibido también de él un ejemplo de humildad y santidad y que esta herencia espiritual era más importante que la primera.

Pedimos por intercesión de la Virgen del Rosario que la herencia de los santos dé fruto en nosotros.

Francisco, great-grandson of Pope Alexander VI and the King of Aragon, Ferdinand the Catholic, was born in Gandía in 1510. He was educated in the court of Emperor Charles and married Leonor de Castro, lady of the Empress, with whom he had eight children .

Named Viceroy of Catalonia, when his father died he inherited the title of Duke of Gandía and retired to his hometown where he founded the University. He was thirty-six years old when he became a widower and decided to enter the Society of Jesus. Nineteen years later he was elected General of the Order and held the position for seven years, until his death in 1572.

Saint Ignatius of Loyola sent a letter to Carlos de Borja, Marquis of Lombay and first-born of Saint Francis. In the letter he reminded him that, if he had inherited titles and wealth from his father, he had also received from him an example of humility and holiness and that this spiritual inheritance was more important than the first.

Let us ask through the intercession of the Virgin of the Rosary that the inheritance of the saints bear fruit in our lives.
