San Pío de Pietrelcina, presbítero

Nació en 1887 y fue bautizado con el nombre de Francisco. 

Hasta los dieciséis años vivió en su pueblo natal y, entonces, se trasladó a Beneveto para ingresar como en el convento de los capuchinos. Allí recibió el orden sacerdotal a la edad de veintitrés años. 

Sus problemas de salud aconsejaron a sus superiores mandarlo de regreso a Pietrelcina donde ejerció su ministerio durante seis años hasta que recibió la orden de volver a hacer vida en común y se trasladó al convento de los capuchinos de San Giovani Rotondo donde murió, habiendo cumplido los ochenta y un años, en 1968.

El Padre Pío recibió los estigmas de la Pasión de Cristo en 1918, el mismo año en que terminaba la Primera Guerra Mundial. 

Toda su vida procuró identificarse con Cristo Víctima en cuyas heridas encontramos la salvación. 

Hombre de oración y penitencia hizo de la Misa el centro de su vida y dedicaba muchas horas cada día a atender a las almas en el confesonario. Fundó más de setecientos grupos de oración y la casa hospital Alivio del Sufrimiento.

Entre los miles de peregrinos que acudieron a confesarse con él hubo un joven sacerdote llamado Carol Wojtyla. Siendo ya obispo, Wojtyla escribió al Padre Pío pidiendo la curación de una señora de cuarenta años, madre de cuatro hijos y enferma de cáncer. Ocho días después volvió a escribirle para anunciar que la señora se había curado instantáneamente antes de ser operada. 

Nuestra Señora lo favoreció con frecuentes apariciones y obró el milagro de su curación con ocasión de la vista de la imagen de la Virgen de Fátima a su convento. A ella encomendamos nuestro camino de fe.

Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, priest

He was born in 1887 and was baptized with the name of Francisco.

Until the age of sixteen he lived in his hometown and then he moved to Beneveto to enter as novice in the Capuchin convent. There he received the priestly order at the age of twenty-three.

His health problems caused his superiors to send him back to Pietrelcina where he exercised his ministry for six years until he received the order to return to life in common and he moved to the Capuchin convent of San Giovani Rotondo where he died, having reached eighty-one years old, in 1968.

Padre Pio received the stigmata of the Passion of Christ in 1918, the same year that the First World War ended.

All his life he tried to identify himself with Christ the Victim in whose wounds we find salvation.

A man of prayer and penance, he made Mass the center of his life and devoted many hours each day healing the souls in the confessional. He founded more than seven hundred prayer groups and the Suffering Relief Hospital home.

Among the thousands of pilgrims who came to confess to him was a young priest named Carol Wojtyla. Already a bishop, Wojtyla wrote to Padre Pio asking for the cure of a forty-year-old lady, mother of four children and suffering from cancer. Eight days later he wrote again to announce that the lady had been cured instantly before undergoing surgery.

Our Lady favored him with frequent appearances and worked the miracle of his healing on the occasion of the visit of the image of the Virgin of Fatima to his convent. To Her we entrust our journey of faith.
