III domingo de Pascua

¿Por qué iban tristes los discípulos de Emaús? Pues iban tristes porque les pasaba lo que nos pasa a muchísimos cristianos, incluidos sacerdotes como yo, obispos y teólogos mucho más listos que yo y personas mucho más buenas que yo que trabajan y están muy comprometidas con la Iglesia. Y es que conocemos a Jesús y amamos a Jesús pero, como los discípulos de Emaús, no hemos entendido a Jesús o, peor, lo hemos entendido al revés. 

Decían los discípulos de Emaús, muy tristes y muy decepcionados: «Nosotros creíamos que Jesús iba a traer el Reino de Dios, o sea, que iba a traer el Cielo a la tierra y que iba a acabar con el hambre, el dolor, la enfermedad, la injusticia y la muerte. Mientras creíamos eso íbamos con Él a todas partes muy ilusionados. Y, ahora que lo hemos visto morir, solo nos queda de Él un recuerdo amable pero triste: el recuerdo de una persona buena que fracasó». 

Pues estas cosas siguen oyéndose en la Iglesia dos mil años después. Cada vez que me pasa algo que me hace sufrir y digo «por qué me pasa esto a mí, que soy cristiano y sacerdote», lo que estoy diciendo es: «Yo pensaba que, por ser cristiano y sacerdote, no me iba a pasar nada malo en la vida y ahora, mira tú qué decepción». Cada vez que he oído decir que la ciencia, o la política o la solidaridad humana iban a acabar con el dolor, con la injusticia y con la pobreza me he entusiasmado. Pero ahora, después de haber oído eso desde que tengo uso de razón, veo que, en los países más ricos y avanzados del mundo, un virus ha acabado con la vida de doscientas mil personas mientras que la guerra, el hambre y la injusticia siguen haciendo estragos y, mira tú qué decepción». 

Y ¿cuál es el remedio contra esa tristeza y esa decepción? Pues el remedio es Jesús. Necesitamos encontrarnos con Él y escuchar otra vez sus palabras. 

Quizá Jesús nos diga: «¿Por qué pensabas que tú, mi discípulo, y yo, tu Maestro, no íbamos a sufrir? ¿No os había dicho yo que el Hijo del Hombre tenía que padecer mucho para entrar en la gloria? Y ¿no os había dicho que también vosotros ibais a ser perseguidos y a sufrir mucho?». 

Y tendremos que decirle: «Sí, Jesús, nos lo habías dicho, pero lo entendimos al revés». 

Quizá Jesús nos diga: «¿Por qué creíste a los que te decían que iban a acabar con la pobreza, el dolor y la injusticia en el mundo? ¿No os había dicho yo que a los pobres los tendréis siempre con vosotros? ¿No os había anunciado yo que, hasta el final de los tiempos, habría en el mundo guerras y calamidades?».

Y tendremos que decirle: «Sí, Señor, pero luego vinieron los políticos diciendo que no necesitábamos a Dios porque ellos iban a convertir la tierra en un paraíso. Y no solamente me fui detrás de ellos sino que animé a otros diciéndoles que esto era lo que Tú querías, que trabajásemos por un mundo feliz sin Dios. Te entendí al revés». 

Y es posible que, entonces, Jesús nos diga: «Pues mira —y, ahora, entiéndeme bien- ni tú ni todos los hombres juntos podéis salvar al mundo porque no sois Dios. Yo sí. Yo, tu Maestro y tu Señor, he vencido sobre el pecado y sobre la muerte. Ahora vuelve a la Iglesia, pero vuelve para hablar de mi victoria. No creas que te voy ayudar a acabar con el hambre en el mundo. Recuerda que quiero que todos los días te levantes, venciendo la pereza, para trabajar; que compartas con los demás tus bienes venciendo el egoísmo y la avaricia; que te humilles ante los demás venciendo la soberbia. No olvides que, para conseguirlo, tendrás que ayunar, rezar, confesar tus pecados y comulgar. Y no olvides que, aún siendo, como eres, un pecador, yo he dado la vida por ti y quiero que, con tus hermanos, lleves por todo el mundo la Buena Nueva del Evangelio».

Si escuchamos su palabra ya no nos cansaremos corriendo detrás de cualquiera que se presente como un salvador. Cargando cada uno con su Cruz, iremos cada día al encuentro del Señor. Y, en el camino, encontraremos siempre el rostro amable de nuestra Madre, la Virgen, Santa María.

Why were the disciples of Emmaus so sad? Well, they were sad because, as many Christians, including priests like me, bishops and theologians much smarter than I and people much better than I am who work and are very committed to the Church, they had not understood the Lord. Like the disciples of Emmaus, we love Jesus but, like them, we have not understood Jesus or, worse, we have understood him backwards.

The disciples of Emmaus said very sadly and disappointedly: "We believed that Jesus was going to bring the Kingdom of God  bringing Heaven to earth and taking away hunger, pain, disease, injustice and death. Believing that, we were very excited and we used to go everywhere with Him. But now, when we have seen Him die, we only have a kind but sad memory of Him- the memory of a good person who failed.

These kind of complaints  continue to be heard in the Church two thousand years later. Every time something happens to me that makes me suffer, if I say, "Why is this happening to me, a Christian and a priest?", what I am saying is, "I thought that because I was a Christian and a priest, nothing bad would happen to me in life and now, look what a disappointment". Every time I have heard that science, or politics, or human solidarity were going to end pain, injustice, and poverty, I was excited. But now, after hearing that since I was a child, I see that in the richest and most advanced countries in the world a virus has killed two hundred thousand people while war, hunger and injustice continue to wreak havoc. And look what a disappointment”.

And, what is the remedy against this sadness and this disappointment? The remedy is Jesus. We need to meet Him and listen again to his words. 

Perhaps Jesus is going to tell us: “Why did you think that you, my disciple, and I, your Master, were not going to suffer? Had I not told you that the Son of Man should suffer greatly to enter glory? And didn't I tell you that you too were going to be persecuted and suffer a lot? “.

And we will have to say to him: "Yes, Jesus, you had told us, but we understood it backwards”.

Perhaps Jesus is going to tell us: “Why did you believe those who told you that they would end poverty, pain and injustice in the world? Had I not told you that you will always have the poor with you? Had I not announced to you that, until the end of time, there would be wars and calamities in the world?”

And we will have to tell him: “Yes, Lord, but then the politicians came saying that we did not need God because they were going to turn the earth into a paradise and not only did I follow them but I encouraged others by saying that this is that You wanted. That You wanted us to work for a happy world without God. I understood backwards”.

Perhaps, then, Jesus is going to tell us: “Well, look and now understand me well. Neither you nor all men together can save the world because you are not God. I am. I, your Master and your Lord, have overcome sin and death. Now, go back to Church, but go back to tell of my victory to your brothers. Do not think that I am going to help you end hunger in the world. Remember that I want you to get up early every day, conquering laziness, to work. That I want you to share your goods with others, overcoming greed. That I want you to humble yourself before others, overcoming pride and that, in order to achieve this, you will have to fast, pray, confess your sins and receive the Eucharist. Do not forget that, even being, as you are, a sinner, I have given My Life for you and I want you, with your brothers, to carry the Good News of the Gospel throughout the world”.

If we listen to His Word we will no longer waste our lives running after anyone who presents himself as the Saviour. With each one carrying his Cross we will go every day to meet the Saviour, and, along the way, we will always find the kind face of our Mother, the Holy Virgin Mary.
