Miércoles de la quinta semana de Pascua

La Virgen de Fátima

¡Felicidades! Llegamos, por fin, a la fiesta que hemos estado preparando durante nueve días. 

Llamamos a María, Madre nuestra, porque así lo dispuso Jesús cuando, en la Cruz, dijo a Juan: «ahí tienes a tu Madre». Por eso veneramos sus imágenes en nuestras iglesias, en nuestras calles y en nuestras casas. Por eso adornamos esas imágenes con flores y, delante de ellas, echamos piropos s la Virgen y oramos diciendo «vuelve a nosotros esos tus ojos misericordiosos» como los niños que aún no saben hablar y llaman a su Madre con lágrimas. 

Todo eso está muy bien. ¡Que se note que es mayo! ¡Que se note que somos cristianos, discípulos de Cristo que nos ha dado a María por Madre! Pero si preguntamos a la Virgen «¿quién eres tú», Ella nos responderá lo que respondió al ángel Gabriel: «Soy la esclava del Señor». Y si le preguntamos «¿qué tenemos que hacer?», nos dirá lo que dijo a los criados en las bodas de Caná, señalando a Cristo: «Haced lo que Él os diga». 

De modo que la Virgen María, admirable por tantas cosas, se ofrece también  a todos los discípulos de Cristo como un modelo a imitar porque Ella fue la primera y la mejor discípula del Señor. 

Cuando aparecen en la iglesia tantos que se alardean de sabios y pretenden ocupar el puesto del Maestro cambiando el Evangelio, Dios interviene y envía a su Madre con un mensaje dirigido a unos niños. Si en el mensaje de Fátima hubiera algo contrario a la fe católica no solamente deberíamos rechazarlo sino que la Iglesia no nos invitaría a celebrar esta fiesta. 

Pero todo lo que la Virgen dice a los niños es lo que la Iglesia ha enseñando siempre desde el principio y así, una vez más, la sabiduría de Dios contradice la falsa sabiduría de los soberbios. 

A esos niños la Virgen les promete el Cielo, pero les permite ver el infierno. Su presencia —luminosa y hermosísima— los llena de alegría y de paz, pero, una y otra vez, los llama a rezar y a hacer penitencia por los pecadores.

Toda la Iglesia se mira en María y aprende de Ella a hablar de Jesús sin ocultar nada: ni el gozo ni el dolor, ni la gloria y la luz ni la realidad del pecado del hombre y de la misericordia que se ha revelado en la Cruz de Cristo. 

Cuando sintamos la tentación de avergonzarnos de la Cruz de Cristo miraremos a nuestra Madre al pie de la Cruz y buscaremos su amparo. Y, cuando nos acerquemos a comulgar nos postraremos ante ese misterio para adorarlo diciendo: Ave verum Corpus natum de Maria Virgine. «Salve Cristo verdaderamente nacido de la Virgen María, verdaderamente inmolado en la Cruz por nosotros y de cuyo costado manó sangre y agua». 

Madre, enséñanos a escuchar a Jesús, a seguir sus pasos, a tratarlo bien en la Eucaristía y a hablar de Él a nuestros hermanos.

Wednesday of the fifth week of Easter

The Virgin of Fatima

Congratulations! We finally arrive at the Feast that we have been preparing for nine days.

We call Mary “our Mother”, because that is what Jesus taught us when, on the Cross, He said to John, "There you have your Mother." That is why we venerate Her images in our churches, on our streets and in our homes. That is why we decorate these images with flowers and, in front of them, we make compliments to the Virgin and pray, saying, “Turn to us Your merciful eyes", or even without words, like the children who still cannot speak but they call their Mother with tears.

This is all very well. Let it be noted that it is May! Let it be noted that we are Christians, disciples of Christ who has given us Mary as Mother! But if we ask the Virgin, "Who are You?”, She will answer us as She answered the angel Gabriel, "I am the slave of the Lord". If we ask Her, "What do we have to do?", She will tell us what She said to the servants at the wedding in Cana, pointing to Christ: "Do whatever He tells you."

So the Virgin Mary, admirable for so many things, is also offered to all the disciples of Christ as a model to imitate because She was the first and the best disciple of the Lord.

When so many appear in the Church that they boast of sages and try to occupy the position of the Master changing the Gospel, God intervenes and sends His Mother with a message addressed to three children. If there was something contrary to the Catholic faith in the Fatima message, not only should we reject it, but the Church would not invite us to celebrate this feast.

But everything the Virgin says to children is what the Church has always taught from the beginning and so, once again, the wisdom of God contradicts the false wisdom of the proud men.

To these children the Virgin promises Heaven, but allows them to see hell. Her presence - bright and beautiful - fills them with joy and peace, but, again and again, She calls them to pray and to make penance for sinners.

The whole Church looks at herself in Mary and learns from Her how to speak of Jesus without hiding anything: neither joy nor pain, nor glory and light, nor the reality of men's sin nor the Mercy of God that has been revealed on the Cross of Christ.

When we feel the temptation to be ashamed of the Cross of Christ we will look at our Mother at the foot of the Cross and seek Her protection. When we come to take the Communion, we prostrate ourselves before that mystery to adore it saying, “Ave verum Corpus natum de Maria Virgine. Hail Christ truly born of the Virgin Mary, truly immolated on the Cross for us,  from whose side blood and water flowed.”

Mother, teach us to listen to Jesus, to follow His steps, to treat Him well in the Eucharist and to speak of Him to our brothers.
