Viernes de la II semana de Cuaresma

Comenzamos hoy la lectura del discurso del Pan de Vida que continuará hasta el sábado de la semana que viene. 

Jesús sube con sus discípulos a una montaña y se sienta allí para descansar con ellos. Pero, en seguida, levantando los ojos y viendo que se acerca mucha gente, se prepara y prepara a sus discípulos para dar a cada uno su alimento. Jesús está bien con sus discípulos y ellos están bien con Él. Pero, cuando aparece más gente, Jesús ensancha su corazón para los que llegan y quiere que sus discípulos aprendan a hacer lo mismo. 

Aparece por allí un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos peces. Es bien poca cosa para una multitud pero a Jesús le basta. 

Toma la ofrenda, pronuncia sobre ella la bendición y empieza a repartir el alimento que, milagrosamente, no solo alcanza a todos sino que sobra lo suficiente como para llenar doce cestos. 

Con este milagro Jesús no instituía la Eucaristía pero la anunciaba. Del mismo modo que cinco panes y dos peces en sus manos habían bastado para saciar a la multitud, el pan y el vino en sus manos iban a convertirse en alimento de vida eterna.

El Papa hablaba esta mañana del deseo de Jesús de estar con la gente, con su Iglesia. Es un deseo muy fácil de entender. ¿Qué padre no quiere estar con sus hijos? ¿Quién no quiere estar con sus amigos? Pero es un deseo que solamente tiene el que ama. Quien no ama a nadie no desea la compañia de nadie. 

El amor que Jesús nos tiene no se echa atrás ante los obstáculos. Para estar con aquella gente que lo buscaba multiplicó los panes y los peces. Para estar con nosotros instituyó la Eucaristía. 

Ójala nuestro amor por Jesús y por nuestros hermanos sea tan fuerte que nada, ni la muerte, nos aparte de Él ni de ellos. 

Ójala nuestro amor por Jesús sea tan fuerte como el que llevó a la virgen a estar con su Hijo al pie de la Cruz.

Friday of the second week of Lent

Today we begin the reading of the Bread of Life speech that will continue until Saturday of next week.
Jesus goes up with his disciples to a mountain and sits there to rest with them. But, immediately, looking up and seeing that many people are approaching, He prepares Himself and prepares his disciples to feed everyone. Jesus feels comfortable with his disciples and they are  comfortable with Him. But when more people appear, Jesus widens his heart for those who come, and wants his disciples to learn to do the same.
Then, a boy appears with five barley loaves and two fish. It is very little for a crowd but it is enough for Jesus to work the miracle.
He takes the offering, pronounces the blessing on it, and begins to distribute the food that, miraculously, not only did it feed everyone but there were twelve full baskets left over.
With this miracle Jesus did not institute the Eucharist but announced it. In the same way that five loaves and two fish in his hands had been enough to feed the crowd, the bread and wine in his hands were going to become food for eternal life.
The Pope spoke this morning of Jesus' desire to be with the people, with his Church. It is very easy to understand that desire. What parents would not want to be with their children? Who doesn't want to be with their friends? But it is a desire that only those who love have. A person who has not love to give would not want company.
The love that Jesus feels for us does not back down in the face of obstacles. To be with those people who were looking for Him, he multiplied the bread and the fish. To be with us He instituted the Eucharist.
May our love for Jesus and for our brothers be so strong that not even  death separates us from them.

Hopefully our love for Jesus will be as strong as the one that led the Virgin to be with her Son at the foot of the Cross.
