Sábado de la IV semana de Pascua

El trece de agosto de 1917 unas cinco mil personas se reunieron en Cova de Iría pero los tres niños no aparecieron. El administrador de Ourem los había detenido en Vila Nova. Para amedrentarlos los amenazó con meterlos en una olla de aceite hirviendo si no le contaban el secreto qe la Virgen les había revelado. Solamente una fortaleza sobrenatural explica que unos niños separados de sus padres y amenazados de esa manera se mantuvieran firmes en su propósito de guardar el secreto de la Virgen.

Esta mañana en Santa Marta el Papa ha hablado precisamente de la Iglesia que peregrina entre las persecuciones del mundo y los consuelos de Dios. Recordaba el Papa que desde la misma mañana de la resurrección, mientras los primeros cristianos se alegraban los soldados y las autoridades se ponían de acuerdo para mentir diciendo que los discípulos habían robado el cuerpo. Y en los Hechos de los Apóstoles que estamos leyendo estos días es una constante: el Espíritu Santo obra, cambia los corazones, inspira a los apóstoles, se producen milagros y la iglesia crece pero, al mismo tiempo el espíritu del mal —lo spirito cattivo, decía el Papa—- se revuelve y suscita persecuciones.

Queremos hacernos como niños para acompañar a Jesús Niño que crece e Nazaret. Pero hacernos niños no es hacernos infantiles. Queremos ser niños sencillos como Jesús, que crece en una aldea sin lujos ni caprichos, y fuertes en el espíritu como Jesús que a los doce años ya asombra a los doctores de la Ley por sus preguntas y respuestas llenas de sabiduría. Sencillos y fuertes como los niños de Fátima a los que sostuvo Espíritu Santo para que dieran su testimonio de fidelidad.

Jesús prometió a sus discípulos que lo que pidieran en su Nombre, Él lo concedería. Y esto es lo que pedimos en Nombre de Jesús y por la interecesión de nuestra Madre, la Virgen de Fátima: que el Espíritu Santo venga sobre nosotros para que sigamos avanzando co toda la Iglesia entre las persecuciones del mundo y los consuelos de Dios.

Saturday of the fourth week of Easter

On August 13, 1917, about 5,000 people gathered in Cova de Iría, but the three children did not appear. The Ourem administrator had detained them in Vila Nova. To intimidate them, he threatened to put them in a pot of boiling oil if they did not tell him the secret that the Virgin had revealed to them. Only a supernatural force could explain that three children separated from their parents and threatened in this way would remain firm in their purpose of keeping the Virgin's secret.

This morning in Santa Marta the Pope spoke precisely of the Church that makes a pilgrimage between the persecutions of the world and the consolations of God. The Pope recalled that from the very morning of the resurrection, while the first Christians were glad to hear the news, the soldiers and the authorities agreed to lie saying that the disciples had stolen the body. In the Acts of the Apostles that we are reading at the moment the opposition to the Gospel is a constant. The Holy Spirit works, changes hearts, inspires the apostles, makes miracles and grows the church but, at the same time, the spirit of evil —lo spirito cattivo, said the Pope, revolts and arouses persecution.

We want to become like children to accompany the Child Jesus. who grows up in Nazareth. But to become children is not to become childish. We want to be simple, easy children like Jesus, who grows up in a village without luxuries or whims. We want to be strong in spirit like Jesus who, at twelve years old, already amazes the Doctors of Law for His questions and answers full of wisdom. We want to be simple and strong children like the children of Fatima who were supported by the Holy Spirit to give their testimony of fidelity.

Jesus promised His disciples that whatever they asked for in His Name, He would grant. This is what we ask in the Name of Jesus and through the intercession of our Mother, the Virgin of Fatima: that the Holy Spirit come upon us so that we continue to advance with the whole Church between the persecutions of the world and the consolations of God.
